Could you try this kernel with wpa-eap http://labs.suse.cz/jslaby/bug-464360/ to track down the oops?
I have installed the kernel to find out that the mac80211/ath5k is loaded with plenty of "Unknown symbol". The dmesg is attached. # rpm -qa | grep kernel | sort kernel-default-2.6.27.11-20090123_20203148 kernel-default-2.6.27.7-9.1 kernel-default-base-2.6.27.11-20090123_20203148 kernel-default-base-2.6.27.7-9.1 kernel-default-extra-2.6.27.11-20090123_20203148 kernel-default-extra-2.6.27.7-9.1 linux-kernel-headers-2.6.27-2.28 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But nothing has changed except that the notebook did not freeze on WPA-EAP authentication.
Yes, that is the primary aim for me right now, I'll look into the rest afterwards.
The NetworkManager log is attached.
Attach dmesg instead, please. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It looks like a race condition during rate altering, band seems to change from 802.11a to b. I can't utter it for sure from the previous kernel, could you retry with the new compiled kernel available at the same location?
I have installed the kernel. dmesg is attached. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

1. Use YaST "Software Repositories" to add the madwifi project repository to the list of repositories. Name: madwifi-project.org URL: http://madwifi-project.org/suse/11.1 Priority: 105 2. Install madwifi-kmp-default that matches the kernel level 3. Add the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist # disable SUSE default software for Atheros wifi cards blacklist ath5k blacklist mac80211 4. Reboot the system. (I didn't experiment to swap drivers without rebooting.)

Also could you attach dmesg
Or just excerpt from archived /var/log/messages, search for 'martian.*n_bitrates'. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you try the ath5k and mac80211 module from compat-wireless, if all the issues are fixed in upstream already:
