[Bug 242099] New: Ant with Tomcat 5.0 - Custom Ant Tasks not configured properly
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242099 Summary: Ant with Tomcat 5.0 - Custom Ant Tasks not configured properly Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Java AssignedTo: dbornkessel@novell.com ReportedBy: surfari@fsmail.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Normally to use Tomcat Custom Ant tasks such as Deploy you have to do as the instructions say in the example Tomcat build.xml file: "Copy the file "server/lib/catalina-ant.jar" from your Tomcat 5 installation into the "lib" directory of your Ant installation" For OpenSuse 10,.2 this would translate as putting a link "/usr/share/tomcat5/server/lib/catalina-ant5.jar" into "/usr/share/ant/lib" All catalina-ant simlinks apparently point to "/usr/share/java/catalina-ant-5.0.30.jar" I even put a copy into "usr/shar/java/ant" Anyway Ant cannot seem to find ANY of these and fails to work on a standard build.xml file for servlets / jsps etc. Error= "taskdef class org.apache.catalina.ant.DeployTask cannot be found" Can be fixed if a specific classpath is added to the taskdef. <taskdef name="deploy" classpath="/usr/share/java/catalina-ant5.jar" classname="org.apache.catalina.ant.DeployTask"/> But this can't be right surely...? What is etc/ant.conf all about...? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Thanks for the bug report. You are right: this and task was forgotten somehow. I will add it. For now, you can do what I will do for the package (as root), do: echo "catalina-ant5" > /etc/ant.d/catalina-ant5 and try again. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242099 ------- Comment #2 from surfari@fsmail.net 2007-02-05 14:40 MST ------- Thanks this has fixed it - it might be an idea though to put a note in the Ant docs about this unusual /etc/ant.d/ stuff tho for us "standard issue" types.. whilst I appreciate all the openSuse work to make something usable "out of the box" the way anything to do with Java has been put together is pretty baffling in truth and makes my job as a university teacher who tries to run java courses where students have XP, Mac, Red Hat and variants, Suse, Debian and variants VERY TRICKY and I am not sure it was a good idea to do it all so differently... I mean Java is crazy enough without Suse rearranging it.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

About your remarks: You are probably right at this. We overtook the packages from jpackage, i.e. RedHat and other RPM based distros should be handle that equally (I am not sure about Debian). However: You have a good point there and I will keep that in mind ... probably it is not even too difficult to change that.
