[Bug 846401] New: no netcat-traditional / GNU netcat anymore
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=846401 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=846401#c0 Summary: no netcat-traditional / GNU netcat anymore Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tito.neuschafer@trashmail.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 A few openSUSE releases ago, netcat-openbsd replaced the traditional netcat (with a different CLI!) by default, but the latter could at least still be installed. Now, even this package has vanished. There is no other netcat package around, neither the (patched) traditional UNIX nor the (compatible) GNU version. Here is what OpenBSD netcat (nc) reports when using the parameters exclusive to traditional netcat, e.g. "-p": "This is nc from the netcat-openbsd package. An alternative nc is available in the netcat-traditional package." However, there is no such package in the openSUSE repos. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. netcat -l -p 1234 Actual Results: netcat exits with the above error (and returns 1) Expected Results: bind to port 1234 and listen in TCP mode -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So here we are, openSUSE arbitrarily replaced a working GNU program with a BSD derivate in a central networking tool heavily relied upon in existing scripts, breaking them completely because of its incompatible CLI and incompatible semantics (regarding end of transfer conditions). Next, even the alternative package vanishes from the distribution and the error message becomes a ridicule. What do I care as a user if the BSD variant has a cleaner implementation or more options? My scripts fail and I never get to know the reason in the first place! Shouldn't it be self-evident that on GNU/Linux, I want GNU programs, not BSD surrogates, or at least compatible behaviour? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=846401 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=846401#c2 --- Comment #2 from Cristian Rodríguez <crrodriguez@opensuse.org> 2014-03-10 10:38:09 CLT --- There is no other netcat for a very simple reason: 1) No opensuse packager is willing to maintain it 2) related to 1, only netcat-openbsd has a mildly responsive upstream. You can complain all you want, but that won't change reality, only if you find a maintainer for both upstream and opensuse we can revive this package. I'd rather provide a solution for netcat -l -p 1234 not working instead. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
