The broadcom wl driver is supposed to support the Broadcom wlan adapters. I suppose your dell wireless 1397 is using other driver. It is Broadcom, but the ssb driver is loaded instead of wl. Try to unload the ssb driver [1] and load the wl [2]. You can observe messages what is going on [3]. If it works try to blacklist the ssb driver [4] and reboot. Did it help ? If not would it be possible to post output of "hwinfo --wlan" and "lsmod" ? Run all commands as root. By the way I found that I don't have broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop installed as I have 2.6.33 kernel(yes have to use it as default kernel doesn't support my intel 5 series hd graphics). I couldn't find appropriate package for this kernel.
I switch to 11.3 when you use 2.6.33 kernel. It would be better to download [1] and compile the Broadcom driver then. You will need to install the pattern devel_kernel [2] before you "make" the driver. The BUILD and INSTALL is strait-forward as described in README.txt. Now it shows networks in "iwlist scan" also it can get IP address using DHCP. However networking still doesn't work. If broadcom-wl is installed, some modules would be blacklisted (bcm43xx, ssb, b43, ndiswrapper) in order to make broadcom-wl the default driver. So, it's a matter of installing or not broadcom-wl. BTW, the Linux kernel 2.6.34 is already part of Factory. From the information you provided here, I get PCI ID: 14e4:4315. Chipset: BCM4312. Partially supported 2.6.33 and later (PIO mode). This means (afaik) that you may need to create a file named b43.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ with options b43 pio=1 qos=0
