Firefox gets its helper applications mainly through gnome-vfs. Since 11.0 it was decided that the gnome-vfs components in Firefox are not shipped on the KDE liveCD because of dependency and space reasons. It could probably still work using system mailcap and mime-types. And it's not the Gnome guys, I think this was done by cthiel. On the KDE CD there is simply no room left.
