[Bug 361408] New: haldaemon doesn't load p4_clockmod
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=361408 Summary: haldaemon doesn't load p4_clockmod Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: diego.ercolani@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Since version 10.2 clockmod modules are load by haldaemon sysinit script there is aline where are tryied all cpufreq modules known by kernel but it isn't tryied p4_clockmod so, if you have a standard desktop Intel CPU P4 or Xeon you don't use authomatically the ondemand governor I propose the included solution to the script that I use in my systems without problems (or better I've not found any problem during normal use). As the solution seems only an errata corrige solution I think there should be other problem (unknown to me) that avoid this solution to be included in standard distribution as the problem begin since opensuse 10.2. -----------CUT HERE----------------- --- /etc/init.d/haldaemon.orig 2008-02-13 10:55:24.000000000 +0100 +++ /etc/init.d/haldaemon 2008-02-13 10:55:44.000000000 +0100 @@ -87,8 +87,8 @@ function load_cpufreq_driver() { - CPUFREQ_MODULES="speedstep_centrino powernow_k8 powernow_k7 powernow_k6 longrun speedstep_ich acpi_cpufreq" - CPUFREQ_MODULES_GREP="^speedstep_centrino\|^speedstep_ich\|^powernow_k8\|^powernow_k7\|^powernow_k6\|^longrun\|^longhaul\|^acpi_cpufreq" + CPUFREQ_MODULES="speedstep_centrino powernow_k8 powernow_k7 powernow_k6 longrun speedstep_ich acpi_cpufreq p4_clockmod" + CPUFREQ_MODULES_GREP="^speedstep_centrino\|^speedstep_ich\|^powernow_k8\|^powernow_k7\|^powernow_k6\|^longrun\|^longhaul\|^acpi_cpufreq\|^p4_clockmod" ###### load CPUFREQ modules############ # if the drivers are compiled in, $CPUFREQ_SYSFS_PATH already exists ------------END CUT---------------- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Throttling is done through processor module, doing throttling through p4 module also, results in a real bad performance behavior. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=361408 User trenn@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=361408#c4 --- Comment #4 from Thomas Renninger <trenn@novell.com> 2008-02-25 06:53:02 MST --- /proc/acpi/processor/*/throttling T0 is full speed, T8 the machine is as good as unresponsive echo [1-8] >/proc/acpi/processor/*/throttling Intel told us to not use throttling at all on SMP machines. It doesn't help you much anyway and is mainly intended for thermal reduction when really high temperatures are reached. P4 CPUs waste a lot of power this is no secret... and there is not much you can do about it (Enhanced SpeedStep Technology is not supported by this CPU I expect? This would really safe energy). Maybe it makes more sense with brand-new machines (to use throttling, still not with p4_clockmode as you cannot use a real CPU frequency driver in parallel, they worked on the throttling interface recently -> I need to ask. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
