[Bug 388754] New: Grub configuration mixed sba and sdb
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=388754 Summary: Grub configuration mixed sba and sdb Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: snwint@novell.com ReportedBy: holgi@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: coolo@novell.com Found By: Component Test When installing Beta 2 and selecting to install grub on certain partition instead of MBR I get a broken configuration: Since in device.map sda is defines as (hd1) and sdb as (hd0) the system will not boot with chainloader from first grub afterwards. Is there any reason why sda is not defined as (hd0) anymore? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But this is a problem of the bootloader. AFAIK the bootloader uses the BIOS ID to determine from which hard disk the system boots. To find that out, you don't have to make full installations. Only boot the kernel (let's say, on a 10.3 system or on a 11.0 system) and look for that EDD warning in the boot log ('dmesg|grep -i edd'). Can you verify that 10.3 didn't show that warning? Is the system i386 or x86-64 (in hardware)? Can you also try kernel-vanilla? When we know that 10.3-vanilla (just use the kernel-vanilla RPMs we provide) is good and the 11.0-vanilla is bad, then we can do a git bisect. No, I don't think that bugs with our openSUSE kernel are 'invalid' and only mainline kernel is valid, but with our kernel CVS it's much more work to do a bisect than with mainline git. In the changelog of mainline kernel there are no changes in EDD area, so I don't think that EDD is directly broken. But I think there's some side effect of other stuff. Please do all tests with different kernel RPMs with one bootloader installation. While the bootloader doesn't _directly_ influence EDD, it's still a BIOS -> kernel issue where the bootloader is just in between. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The machine is quite similar compared to Holgi's test machine. The problem is: The rom_id is not assigned in the EDD code (2 matches because of 2 equal disks). It's assigned in the set_bios_id() code. And because the kernel device enumeration order changed (what we also discussed because of network code), the 2nd disk gets 0x80, the 1st disk gets 0x81. Steffen, can you "fix" that? Maybe I'm also wrong in my short analysis ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

They even have the same mbr signature which is statistically rather improbable. I'd really like to know how you managed that. If the disks are indistinguishable, hwinfo makes a bold guess and assigns BIOS ids in the oder disks are listed. Since the kernel reversed all sysfs entries some weeks ago, you're out of luck. Sorry, I see nothing I can do at this point. But I disabled that then in the BIOS configuration. That's what the normal user also would do in such a situation. So I don't consider that box as “improperly setup”. But maybe that's the cause that the MBR looks identical *here*.
Sorry, I see nothing I can do at this point.
Well, I think sda == 0x80 and sdb == 0x81 is a better guess than now. Or just add an entry to hwinfo that says that the BIOS IDs are guessed rather than provided by EDD, so that the bootloader configuration can catch that case and ask the user, write a info box or something like that instead of blindly taking that numbers and failing then. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think hwinfo does not assign ids if it doesn't have any idea at all. It's just that in this case both disks are attached to the same controller and so it looks like a reasonable guess to iterate through them.
