Kismet grabs also stray beacons, it has nothing to do with sensitivity. I can connect to those I have credentials for, and not all are visible in Linux. How did you track this down to an iwl3945 sensitivity problem? My test case is as follows: I have a Gateway MX6923b laptop on which I have installed Opensuse 11.0 plus all current updates. I have also got an Asus WL500gP wireless router configured with standard WEP encryption. Now using Windows in my kitchen (which is about 5 metres underneath the router's location separated by a thin wooden ceiling), I can connect to the router every time and the signal strength is reported as very good (something in the 90% region). Using Linux, I usually don't get a connection at all and the wireless network does not show up in "kinternet->Wireless Connections". I have to physically go to my access point, get the laptop to connect and then I can go back downstairs and maintain the connection. However, the signal strength that iwlist and kinternet report is something like 50%. This is quite frustrating as you can imagine... Once it is connected, it usually manages to reconnect but then again sometimes it doesn't... Similarly, Windows seems to pick up all the other wireless networks in the neighbourhood from almost anywhere in the house whereas Linux only picks them up when I get closer to the relevant routers. (As they are all encrypted, I cannot try to connect to them). So, in summary, the Windows driver is better at picking up the signals (ie more sensitive) than the Linux driver. The numbers are relative, maybe only wrongly computed (e.g. wrong max signal strength, bug in driver, firmware, hardware...).

No, you can't utter that from the text above. As I already wrote, it depends on what windows enumerates as able-to-connect APs. Unless you can verify that you can connect to them, it tells us nothing. My current workaround is to ignore kinternet completely and manually bring up the Wifi card using ifup wlan0 as root, this usually results in the dhcp process backgrounding as it can't get an IP address. Once the wlan0 is up with no IP address, I keep scanning the available networks using iwlist wlan0 scanning. Yes, at least we have the time axis. I suppose you moved closer to the AP at 14:34:26? I see all 3 auth resp frames coming 2 seconds after it timed out at 14:30:19, that's weird... What's the card in the second laptop? If it uses mac80211 and supports monitor mode, you should do: # ip link set wlan0 down # iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor # ip link set up and run tcpdump with dumping to a file (tcpdump -i wlan0 -s 0 -w output_file) or wireshark (choose wlan0 as a capture device) and save the captured packets after the unsuccessful association.
But next time this happens, I'll try and capture the network traffic.
