[Bug 835277] New: During initial reboot after installation, system hangs in step "check installation- Initializing- Preparing initial system configuration"
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=835277 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=835277#c0 Summary: During initial reboot after installation, system hangs in step "check installation- Initializing- Preparing initial system configuration" Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.1 Milestone 4 Platform: i586 OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: f.leerink@xs4all.nl QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:22.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/22.0 Hello, I tried to install openSUSE 13.1-MILESTONE 4 on a Pentium 4 system.(2.66 GHz and1,5 GB memory) The new install went oke initially but the system hangs during reboot. The system rebooted with the DVD still in the DVD-Drive. I selected boot from hard-disk. I could normally select openSUSE 13.1 and press enter. The system showed the screen with all the installation steps and in the step "check installation- Initializing- Preparing initial system configuration" the system hangs (permanently). Finally I pressed the power button. I retried it with the same result. The only difference was that the system has noticed that the earlier reboot failed and asked me whether I would try it again. I tried it once more in rescue mode with again the same result. Finally, after my evening meal, I tried it once more and the reboot finished succesfull. I could even Set up my wireless network card with a fixed IP address. The only difference with my earlier trials, I could think of, was that I put the rotating cursor on the left dark side of the installation screen. During the succesfull reboot I experienced 2 other hick ups: -- The system reported that the internet test failed, but a few seconds later the internet connection was oke. -- During login in the system reported that Kwin failed and as a result there was no default panel. I added the default panel and could normally work with it. The only effect was that I had 2 default panels after the next reboot. Deleting one of them cured that problem, I can now normally login / logout in the openSUSE 13.1 Milestone4 system. Is there a way to find out what the real problem was, I am prepared to do a reinstallation if needed. Regard, Frans PS This is the same system that has bug 818987 with openSUSE 12.3 but in 13.1-build 4 that problem is solved. The system noted that the IW package (109.73 kb) had to be installed and during that step I got the following error: UI Syntax error
looks familiar too. Lada, please check that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But of course wifi still doesn't work. I'm trying to build the wl driver like Bill Dimm mentioned above, but I'm getting compile errors. Looks like we're dealing with some bad broadcom firmware packaged with 13.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you check whether blacklisting ssb and b43 should suffice? These are known to be broken on certain machines and lead to freeze, while brcmsmac is more stable. BTW, the firmware for brcmsmac is included in kernel-firmware package.

Honestly, this research where I found this bug report was my last trial before I said that I give up. Give up means that we as a company would not recommed openSUSE to our customers at all.
You might want to recommend SUSE Linux Enterprise to your customers if you're concerned about stability. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
