[Bug 706280] New: Realtek ALC888B not properly detected in installation, audio does not work properly
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=706280 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=706280#c0 Summary: Realtek ALC888B not properly detected in installation, audio does not work properly Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: rdernesto@hotmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=440439) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=440439) output file of /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0 Fresh install of opensuse 11.4 32bits, all updates applied. Motherboard Gigabyte H55M-S2V, yast detects the sound card as ALC887-VD instead of ALC888B. Audio only works in front speakers, and it is impossible to configure alsa (via alsamixer) nor pulseaudio (via pavucontrol) to use 5.1 (surround) sound. Attaching output file of /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh output of cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-hda-intel # u1Nb.kFNviVz3E80:5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel # NXNs.5nzgvdJ9iO5:nVidia Corporation alias snd-card-1 snd-hda-intel Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.install opensuse on a system with the Realtek ALC888B audio chip 2. apply all updates 3. attempt to configure audio channels in alsa or pulse audio Actual Results: There is no option to select 6 channel audio in alsamixer nor pavucontrol Expected Results: alsamixer should have the option to select 2 or 6 channel output, same for pavucontrol all attempts to edit configuration for the sound card via yast->audio failed. Passing diferent values to "Use the given card model" produced mixed results, some values result in no audio at all, others seem to work for a little while, then all audio dissapears. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please try alsa-driver-kmp from OBS multimedia:audio:KMP repo. Choose the correct repository depending on the kernel you are using. See below for details: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Alsa-update
Hello, i have compiled and installed an updated alsa driver pack i downloaded from the realtek site here: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false Please note i dont think this is a "propietary" driver, it is just an updated alsa driver pack (i think it is equivalent to installing alsa-driver-kmp). I am attaching the read me file on that tar for you to see. This solved the problem. 6channel audio works in alsa, however i had to disable pulseaudio, because when it was enabled, the volume controls did not work, and i had no sound from the subwoofer channel. After i disabled pulseaudio, the system worked perfectly. Even if i no longer have the problem, i will be happy to assist in any way i can to solve this issue in opensuse. Should i still try to install the alsa-driver-kmp as you instructed? and if so, after i do, what else should i do? do you need aditional information? Please let me know what more i can do to help. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Note that the driver in realtek's web site is much older than the current alsa-driver snapshot. So, try OBS alsa-driver-kmp update first. You just need to install one package, and that's all.
Instgalled alsa-driver-kmp-desktop, got some warnings during install (attaching console output). After restart, i get fatal errors during boot (attaching boot.msg), and now there is no audio at all. on any channel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's likely because you installed Realtek driver manually. It conflicts with the update modules.
Clean up them and try again.
to be honest, im not shure how to clean up. Ill just do a clean reinstall of opensuse 11.4 and try installing the alsa-driver-kmp there. It's the problem of manual installation :)
Basically what you need to clean up is the files under /lib/modules/$VERSION, where $VERSION is the current running kernel version, shown in "uname -r" command.
Remove this directory and its sub-directories, re-install kernel-desktop.rpm again forcibly, then re-install alsa-driver-kmp again.
hi, did exaclty that, but i get the same warnings when installing alsa-driver-kmp-desktop and same results. No audio whatsoever. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Mea culpa. It's a recent breakage due to the change of configure option. I fixed it now, and the package will be ready later.
no worries :) im doing a clean reinstall of opensuse. I would appreciate it if you could let me know when the package is ready, so i can test it again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It should be already available. Give it a try.
did a fresh install of opensuse 11.4, applied all updates, and installed alsa-drivers-kmp-desktop. I still had a couple of warnings while installing alsa-drivers-kmp-desktop (attaching console output). After i installed and rebooted, The audio works perfectly now AS LONG as i disable pulse audio in yast. If i leave pulseaudio enabled, i dont get sound from my subwoofer, volume controls dont work as expected (some do nothing, some change all sound instead of a special channel). However, after i disabled pulseaudio, everything works perfectly. But i have no volume control on my notification area. To control individual channels i have to go to yast->sound->volume... And of course i can use the volume control on a per application bases, to configure overall volume. I wonder if this problem with pulseaudio is a diferent bug/issue? I hate pulseaudio anyway hehe :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks, the warnings are another typos in configure script. Fixed now. But it's anyway harmless for you, so just ignore until the next update.
About PulseAudio: it must support the surround outputs, too. Can't you change the speaker profile in pavucontrol? It should have 5.1 setup, too.
yep, i have selected 5.1 profile in pavucontrol, but i dont get any sound from the subwoofer, the slider control for subwoofer doesnt do anything, and the other sliders to change volume are all wrong, some dont work, some change other channels, etc. Also, if i try to use pavucontrol while banshee is active, banshee crashed immediately without any warning or error message. However, i do suspect this is another issue (apart from the bug i reported), because as long as i disable pulseaudio, everything works perfectly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
