[Bug 381726] New: wrong grub device.map - can't boot openSUSE 11. 0 from openSUSE 10.3 grub menu - Error 2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381726 Summary: wrong grub device.map - can't boot openSUSE 11.0 from openSUSE 10.3 grub menu - Error 2 Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: gilles.sabourin@free.fr QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer I have a 64 bits PC based on ASUS P5K-E WIFI/AP with 1 SATA SAMSUNG 500GB (hd0), 1 IDE WD 120GB (hd1) and another WD 160GB (hd2), according bios order. Here's the partition map : [sda1 PR. : WIN XP ][sda4 - EXT [sda5 10.3 / ][sda6 /home][sda7 swap]] hd0 [sdb4 - EXT [sdb5 FAT32 - datas ------------------------------------]] hd1 [sdc1 PR. : FAT32 ]-------------------------------------------------] hd2 I have booted openSUSE 11 DVD and have selected expert mode to create partitions on hd2 drive. I was surprised that installation system called sdb instead of sdc for hd2 drive. So I had to create sdb4 extended, sdb5, sdb6 and sdb7 logical partitions to install openSUSE 11 instead of sdc4, sdc5, sdc6 and sdc7 respectively. I haven't changed any disk boot order in bios. Original 10.3 device.map was : (fd0) /dev/fd0 (hd0) /dev/sda (hd1) /dev/sdb (hd2) /dev/sdc and openSUSE 11 device.map is now, wrongly : (fd0) /dev/fd0 (hd1) /dev/sda (hd0) /dev/sdc (hd2) /dev/sdb After installation, openSUSE 11 (hd2) was only able to boot because boot loader installation squashed my original SATA MBR (hd0) without any further advice. So I decided to restore 10.3 MBR to be able to boot on 10.3 installed system. I succeded, but, as an alternate way, I have to add a grub menu entry into 10.3 menu for my newly installed openSUSE 11. To do this I have selected "Propose to merge with existing GRUB menu" in yast boot loader management. These lines were added : ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25-rc9-17 (/dev/sdc5)### title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25-rc9-17 (/dev/sdc5) root (hd2,4) configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst Now, I am not able to boot openSUSE 11 anymore; whenever I select "openSUSE 11" in grub menu, I get this error : Bad File or directory. Error 2. I tried to correct manually (according real disk bios order) device.map, menu.lst and fstab from openSUSE 11 installation, but this is unsuccessful so far. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Now, I am not able to boot openSUSE 11 anymore; whenever I select "openSUSE 11" in grub menu, I get this error :
Bad File or directory. Error 2.
This is a different bug entirely: see Bug #358483 - add grub support for 256-byte inodes. 10.3's grub cannot read the 256-byte inodes created by default by 11.0's mkfs.ext3 (I ran into the same problem but was lucky enough to have seen it mentioned on a mailing list :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
