http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=555555 Summary: Errors during init boot script during first boot after install Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lars.koraeus@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=327536) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=327536) The /var/log/boot.msg. User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; en-GB) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.00 After a new install during the first boot. In the beginning of the boot script it starts to show a lot off errors about "root" unknown user. Everything goes very quick so it is impossible to read all the messages. But there is about on full screen with the same message. Then it hangs with a screen saying that the install had some errors. No keyboard or mouse available. Power off is the only way out. If I install 11.2-rc1 and then upgrade it works. Have tried to do a another new install but with the same result. I did change the /etc/sysconfig/boot so I could follow what happens. Everything seems fine until after mounting devpts. Starting udevd complains that all the groups are unknown. Try to install floppy although it should have been disabled bu the BIOS the new window with the "Starting Installation" The previous installation has failed etc ...
From here only power off is the only option.
Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.New Installation 2.First reboot 3.Then problem during the init boot script. Actual Results: It hangs with the screen "Starting Installation" The previous installation has failed etc ... Expected Results: A normal boot to the login Have tried to make a new install several time but with the same result. If I upgrade from 11.2-rc1 it works OK. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From a mailing of Lars:
| Thank you for this. | | >From my point of view I have done a work around. | I did install 11.1 and the upgraded to 11.2 instead of using new install of | 11.2. | | However what I think had happen is that something got wrong when writing to | the disk during the configuration part. Probably more files are corrupted. | A clue might that I just at the end of the boot I get: | "Uhh, too many forks, PIDs got reused, we are confused at #### hald-runner | fork -####." | | Best Regards | Lars Koraeus I'd like to suppose to use the bugzilla interface otherwise it may happen that such mails will fade out due my large mail folders. Next point is that all readers of the bug should be able to read your comments in a clear order way in defined environment like bugzilla. Thank you. To your problem: Which file system(s)? you have choosen for which partitions. Do you have choosen an experimental file system? Then all readers should also know which partition layout you've choosen, that is that the root file system should be one partition (/bin, /etc, /tmp, /sbin, /lib, and /lib64) otherwise the system will not be able to boot in a correct way. Please provide your answer herein this bugzilla entry, thank you. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From here on it goes for all our computers.
I.E. only ONE single line in a widget setting of a customtz=true to customtz=false in .kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc, is the difference between a total hanging system and a working one. Missing configs here. ?? is this Linux? Or have I got a Windows in the shape of Linux?? Another example Sometimes it get problems in boot.localfs. It hangs on the fsck for the first fsck ( now an ext3 partition). All other instances of fsck works. I can stop it with ctrl-D. Then I come to a mismatch of repair file system prompt and a login prompt. Another ctrl-D gives me then the KDM and I can log in but not with KDE because only the root file system is mounted. after a mount -a everything is OK again. Yet another curiosity. I had the understanding that it did not matter in which order you had the lines in the fstab before. They were still mounted in correct order if there was some dependencies. Now it seems that mount -a need to have the lines in mounting order. I have got the feeling that there is some problem with writing to a file. All my problems seems to have one thing in common and that is incompletely disk writing and sometimes it hangs when writing to a file. I hope this is what "needed" -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
