You might want to try 11.2 MI8 (or the latest packages from the X11:XOrg repository).

There have been quite a number of fixes in the intel driver lately, and they might fix your issues. You will have your best chances when you also update the kernel to 2.6.31 and use KMS by booting with i915.modeset=1

I installed fusion-icon from an alternative repository, and I observerd that MI8 is WAY BETTER, I experienced no crashes so far.
