[Bug 344132] New: Kernel panic with kernel 2.6.22.12-0. 1 -586 and sony_laptop module
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=344132 Summary: Kernel panic with kernel 2.6.22.12-0.1 -586 and sony_laptop module Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: trenn@novell.com ReportedBy: r.schuh@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- After online update to kernel 2.6.22.12-0.1 -586 the following message appears during boot: EIP (<f0a60f35>) sony_pic_irq+0xfa/0x15a (sony_laptop) SS:ESP 0068:efc85ea0 Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interupt The only way to start the laptop again was with Failsafe or to go back to the original kernel from the dvd. Another possibility is to put the Sony_laptop module on the Blacklist. But if the Sony_laptop module is not loaded the Fn and with this the adjustment of the brightness of the LCD does not work any longer. Also the jogdial does not work. So this is not the solution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The only way to start the laptop again was with Failsafe This is because acpi=off is passed and the acpi driver for the sony hid SNY6001 device is not loaded.
Another possibility is to put the Sony_laptop module on the Blacklist This should be your preferred workaround until it's fixed.
Hmm, it's a bit difficult to reproduce what exactly happened. I could try to find the exact kernel you used and try to find the command issued at: sony_pic_irq+0xfa/0x15a Do you remember a bit more about the error (should be at the beginning of the panic/oops), maybe a divison through zero, NULL pointer dereference, ... Maybe Mattia already knows about this one? If yes, I can point you to an already compiled 2.6.24-rcX kernel to try whether it's already fixed for you... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, I'd like to have the fix for the general kernel panic that went into 2.6.23.X...
heh, I bit of confusion on my side. The fix I was mentioning in the stable queue was for 2.6.22.2 and was this: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.22.y.git;a=commit... the patch you want to fix the oops in sony_pic_irq is
2007-08-24 Mattia Dongili sony-laptop: call sonypi_compat_init earlier
it went to Len some time around .23-rc4 and is not actually related to the kernel bugzilla entry I pointed out before. So 2.6.23 final should be ok as well for the OP. I first noticed this bug on my old vaio that has a jogdial (which the OP mentions) and is a GR model.
Something else: It looks like the resources (_CRS/_PRS/_SRS) are parsed by the sony laptop module itself? I expect this could be done easier using the pnp layer. Hmm, but I am not sure how this works if you have/want a pure acpi driver attached to your PNPxy HID, do you need to register a pnp driver then instead? Bjorn should know, hmm I won't CC him here, maybe this should be asked on ACPI list with Bjorn CC'ed for broader audience...
thanks for pointing this out, I'll take a look at the acpi pnp layer and see what I can work out eventually asking on linux-acpi. mattia -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
