Subject: Tier4 SLED languages To: ICormican@novell.com Cc: "Shane Wims" , aj@suse.de Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 11:44:13 +0100 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable We already support all listed tier1 and tier2 languages. Tier3 does not seem to exist. Some of the tier4 languages are already supported and initial files are already available--those with [*] must be tested by Mike Fabian and the YaST team again (are fonts still available?, still in the YaST language selection menu?):
Availability of scalable In YaST language fonts in inst-sys: selection menu: SLES10 STABLE SLES10 STABLE Arabic (ar) [*] yes yes no yes Bengali (bn) [*] yes yes yes yes Catalan (ca) yes yes no yes Greek (el) yes yes yes yes Hebrew (he) [*] yes yes yes yes Hindi (hi) [*] yes yes yes yes Slovak (sk) yes yes yes yes Slovenian (sl) yes yes yes yes Tamil (ta) [*] no no no no Turkish (tr) yes yes yes yes Ukrainian (uk) yes yes yes yes Marathi (mr) yes yes [1] no yes Gujarati (gu) no no [2] no no Thai (th) no no no no Telugu (te) no no no no Malayalam (ml) no no [3] no no Zulu (zu) yes yes [4] no no Xhosa (xh) yes yes [4] no no Afrikaans (af) yes yes no no Northern Sotho (nso) yes yes [5][6] no no [1] Marathi uses Devanagari script, i.e. it uses the same script as Hindi and therefore the same fonts as Hindi. [2] FreeSans in STABLE has Gujarati, but I guess it is not usable. [3] The iso-639-1 code is "ml", not "mn" (as was written in Karl's mail), see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayalam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes "mn" is Mongolian. [4] uses only ASCII, therefore no problem at all with fonts. [5] fontconfig doesn't yet know the orthography for Northern Sotho, i.e. a nso.orth file is missing in the fontconfig sources. [6] There is no locale for this language yet in glibc. I.e. as far as fonts are concerned there is no difference between SLES10 and STABLE, we need to add fonts for Tamil, Gujarati, Thai, Telugu, and Malayam: Font file size rpm package in SUSE Tamil (ta) TSCu_Paranar.ttf 68K indic-fonts Gujarati (gu) lohit_gu.ttf 148K indic-fonts Thai (th) Garuda.ttf 40K fonts-thai Malayalam (ml) RachanaMedium.ttf 1.1M indic-fonts Telugu (te) - - I.e. it is easy for Tamil, Gujarati, and Thai as we have free fonts available for these languages. For Telugu we need to go searching for a free, usable font. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=237347 ------- Comment #3 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-01-22 09:41 MST ------- Mike Fabian> For Telugu we need to go searching for a free, usable font. A Telugu font is available for download here: http://www.kavya-nandanam.com/dload.htm Adding our legal experts to CC: to check whether the license is OK. ( You can use this font freely for your personal use, and you can publish material created with this font after giving due credit to me (K.Desikachary), the creator of this font. If you like what I am doing and want to help me in my efforts, you may donate whatever you like for my projects. One such project is to publish hitherto unpublished works of great poets from original manuscripts on the web. As you know there are many great works of poetry languishing in the manuscript libraries that haven't seen the light of the day. It is very worthwhile to publish them, and web publishing is the most affordable way of doing this. Even so, it involves considerable amount of work to collect all the available manuscripts, and to critically prepare an authentic version of the manuscript. This calls for great dedication and scholarship and involves some cost. If I can raise enough money through donations, I will give it as a research grant to a qualified scholar in a Telugu Department in India and entrust him/her with the task of authentic manuscript preparation. I estimate it requires about $1000-2000 per work to accomplish this. So, any amount you donate for using my font will be used for this project. If you are willing, you may send your voluntary contributions to my address given at the end in the user manual. Now you may download the Font. ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=237347 ------- Comment #6 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-01-22 10:14 MST ------- There are other Telugu fonts here: http://www.cdacmumbai.in/projects/indix/n_download.shtml They seem to be under GPL. I'm not sure whether the will work without problems becaus of: http://www.cdacmumbai.in/projects/indix/RaghuFonts/RORaghuTeluguReadme.txt
Usage
Using RaghuTelugu font to its full potential, requires a text layout system capable of recognizing Unicode standard and reordering as well as combining characters according to the visual syllable standard of IndiX Compugraphy. Refer to the standard available on website http://www.cdacmumbai.in/projects/indix RaghuTelugu is to be used for continuous text in Telugu language. And is recommended to be used in minimum 16pt. size on screen and 10pt. size on paper.
That might mean that the IndiX shaping engine is required which is available on the same site: http://www.cdacmumbai.in/projects/indix/new-dw/IndiXDeveloper.tbz
This DEVPKG contains the source of the IndiX shaping engine that converts Indic text in Unicode to Glyphs from OpenType fonts. It does conversions (UTF-8 to UCS-2), tagging of the text with script and syllable, reordering of logical syllables to visual syllables, and conversion of the visual syllable of characters to a renderable syllable of glyphs. IndiX supports nine Indic scripts and comes with the required Raghu series of OpenType fonts. Vedic Sanskrit is added. The IndiX fonts are not in this DEVPKG.
I have never tried this and don't yet know whether this works well with Qt, GTK2, ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It's README says: RaghuTelugu font original Version 1.00 (2005) has been released under GNU GPL Version 2. Perhaps we should declare our .po files as poetry? Actually we already had Dr. Desikacharyulu's fonts in our distribution,
they were in the package "indic-fonts". But they didn't work!
