The dhcpcd (default client) is started with "-R" option when DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF is not set to "yes", what should avoid any calls to modfy_resolvconf. When it is set to yes, modify_resolvconf updates resolv.conf only when also MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF_DYNAMICALLY=yes - that is used e.g. by ppp as well. This means: You have to set both variables to "yes" to update the resolv.conf. DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF=no disables updates by dhcp MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF_DYNAMICALLY=no disables updated by dhcp and ppp. I don't see any problem here for "traditional" alias netcontrol alias "ifup" networks scripts. Are you using NetworkManager? I'd say, it ignores both variables.
