[Bug 256807] New: Installation fails to find SATA HDD
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256807 Summary: Installation fails to find SATA HDD Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: IMW@imwilliams.plus.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com When starting an installation of OpenSUSE 10.2 the program, after probing drives, reports "Error No hard disks were found for the installation. Please check your hardware!" and presents a button marked "OK". On clicking OK the installer proceeds to offer "Select Mode" with only "New Installation" available. The installer will proceed further but cannot offer anywhere for the installation, so continuing is pointless. The PC is a recent PC manufactured by Medion. The model it is named "Irresistible", their Model No. is 8818. The PC is a Core 2 Duo system running at 1.86 Ghz. It uses a VIA Serial ATA Controller - 5287 and has a single Seagate SATA hard drive. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256807 ------- Comment #1 from IMW@imwilliams.plus.com 2007-03-23 05:09 MST ------- It appears that Win XP incorrectly identifies the VIA SATA controller. SATA is controlled by the SouthBridge which is, in fact, a VIA VT8251L (the final L may not make any difference). Not identifying the VT8251 may also have other operations controlled by this chip, e.g. Ethernet operation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Here is list of kernel parameters witch can be added to kernel parameters line: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Kernel_Parameters_for_ACPI/APIC Please report if some combination of them helped you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256807 ------- Comment #3 from IMW@imwilliams.plus.com 2007-03-28 14:46 MST ------- No joy (the SUSE installation disk already has some of the options such as acpi or apic off as it is), but other choices failed to help either. On further browsing of the web I have found that the incorrect identification of the VT8251 has, supposedly, been patched in kernel 2.6.18, the 10.2 installer, however, uses the 2.6.17 kernel which predates the patch! I presume that it is not possible to edit (patch) this parameter before the installer starts its probing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256807 ------- Comment #4 from IMW@imwilliams.plus.com 2007-04-05 16:39 MST ------- I have now tried other Linux distributions, both live and installable, and found the same problem with them as well. In each case the SATA HDD was not found. : As a further piece of information. In the PC's (Phoenix) BIOS, under "Integrated Peripherals / VIA OnChip IDE Device / SATA Controller Mode", is set to IDE (the choices are:- IDE, RAID or AHCI). With AHCI selected Linux still fails to find the HDD. Additionally, neither will XP boot with AHCI chosen. (Is the drive geometry set out differently when using AHCI?) : A final item which I have not come across in previously, is that the PC lists a total of 32 interrupts (IRQs). Could this make a difference? (I did not know that the number had been extended beyond sixteen, though it is long overdue.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If it doesn't give you command console please try other function keys. 3. plug in a usb stick and mount it - after plugging in a usb stick, type dmesg, the messages will tell you which sdX node the usb stick is. You can mount it to /mnt by executing 'mount /dev/sdX /mnt'. 4. run the following commands. # dmesg > /mnt/dmesg.out # lspci -nnvvv > /mnt/lspci.out # hwinfo --all > /mnt/hwinfo.out 5. unmount usb stick 6. post the three out files here. It uses a propriety non-ATX motherboard. The DVD drives do, however, still use a PATA interface. There is the complication that the system only has one interface so a hard drive would have to share the same PATA connection with one of the DVD drives in Master/Slave configuration. Not ideal, but should allow for a developmental install. I presume that you would provide the patched kernels, since my skills would not be adequate for this sort of experimentation, though I could, hopefully, follow instructions providing they are reasonably explicit. : Also, I have found myself rather busy of late so you might have to be fairly patient with regard to receiving results. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
