https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230716 ------- Comment #3 from jan.sekal@volny.cz 2006-12-25 11:16 MST ------- I performed a third installation of suse 10.2 final, this time without 3D accelaration enabled then i uninstalled openoffice (for detailed description see bug no. 230731) ram consumption was approx 130 MB instead of 200 MB (yes, certainly after restart and fresh login) than i started adobe acrobat reader (installed from the installation dvd), clicked accept, and closed the application then i restarted and logged in again - the ram consumption was then 100 MB !! the ram consumption could also be connected with bug no. 230738 (reported by me) - but i did not observe 100 % CPU consumption.. my subjective feeling is that suse 10.2 final is also waste of human resources in connection with this problem, i would suggest to add into ksysguard a third tab "RAM guard" - which would the user enable to select which process can be started, how much ram does it occupies, what is this process usable for (e.g. killing or disabling of this process is not possible because it is a system program)... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

i think it is a bug, people are often not rich enough to buy more and more ram
i realized one thing - this increase in ram occupation from 100 MB to 200 MB (when the same applications are opened in both cases!) could be due to the fact, that I was viewing OpenGL screen savers before taking this screen shot (showing that ram occupation did not decrease back to 100 MB) and they probably turned 3D acceleration on and they did not turn it off after i closed them - this is the only explanation I can imagine... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Further more, I am not able to cooperate online, because during the day I am working and i have time usually only in the evening. I am somewhat disappointed, because of these subjective opinions: 1. I thought only Microsoft does not solve problems like this.. 2. I thought linux developers want to have their system precise in every detail and that they are proud of it.. So, please, supply me with some detailed instructions (a link, a keyword to put into google, ...) how to watch the system (I am a poor novice). I will then inform developers of the relevant application (if successful). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If you dont care that I will supply the info relatively slowly, then you can let it opened (I dont know, if there is a special bug status for these case - "latent" or "sleeping" or "slow testing speed"), because when there something rotten, I am always there (I dont know why) :) (this feature predicts me to be good at testing software) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Hi, this is how to reproduce the strange not clearing of ram: 1. restart the computer 2. after logging in as a user, start ksysguard, take a snapshot using ksnapshot, save it, close ksnapshot 3. start configure desktop / appearance and themes / screen saver 4. unfold OpenGL screen savers 5. click ond 4D hypertorus and click on test, after 2s click (to close the preview) 6. then perform the same as described in previous point with the next screen saver, and so on until Screen saver "cubenetic" 7. then take a snapshot using ksnapshot and you will get the same screen shot like in the following attachment -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Therefore it's not possible to fix the bug yet, because the info you provided is too general. We need a more specific description - which program does it wrong - which one consumes the memory. Maybe it's not a bug at all, just as Lubos wrote. There can be newly started and still running daemons. So, please run the command 'top' in terminal ('konsole'), as Cyril suggested, before and after doing the memory consuming operations. It will show you some information about actually running processes, including memory consumption. Then, please post the obtained information. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Ok. Could you add
Load "dri"
to Section "Module" to enable 3D support and check if this makes a difference in behaviour? This would be interesting for further investigation(s).
I added Load "dri" to the Module section (to the last line of that section) and I observed following: after restart ram consumption was approx. 150 MB when I performed the test described in comment 17, memory consumption went back to the initial value, so it seemed ok to me if the line load "dri" is deleted, ram consumption after restart is approx. 90 MB (and memory is not freed after previewing the openGL screen savers) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So is the situation better/worse or same with DRI?
with DRI, it is better the way, that memory is freed (after previewing openGL screen savers as described in comment 17), but after new start of open suse, memory consumption is approx. 150 MB ("user processes") (this is probably neccessary to pay for the 3D acceleration) without dri, it is better the way, that after new start of suse, ram consumption is only 90 MB ("user processes"), but memory is not freed (after previewing openGL screen savers as described in comment 17) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
