[Bug 214897] New: Internet Connection Test fails with two NICs
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214897 Summary: Internet Connection Test fails with two NICs Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rplewe@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com My Laptop has two NICs, one GB and one WLAN. According to 'ifconfig', the GB interface is set up correctly as eth0 at this point, able to ping other computers on the network. The internet connection test fails, and gives the Kernel Messages: logger: BEGIN OF YAST2 INTERNET TEST ifstatus: Network interface is managed from NetworkManager ifstatus: eth1 is down logger: END OF YAST2 INTERNET TEST That is as such correct (the wlan card is not set up, and may not be supported even). But that is no reason to fail the internet connection test. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214897 ------- Comment #1 from kmachalkova@novell.com 2006-11-08 08:59 MST ------- In the Internet test, you can change the device that you use for connection to the Internet. There should be 'Change device' radio button for that and in the following pop-up window, you should be able to select the right device you want to use. If that does not allow you to change the device, please attach yast logs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214897 ------- Comment #6 from rplewe@novell.com 2006-11-13 03:56 MST ------- I apologize, I was confused about having several OS versions on the machine and the machine not near me when I collected the log. Meanwhile I installed 10.2. You're right, the radio button was there, but it experienced two problems: 1) The wrong interface was preselected. One interface had network connection, the other one not. The one with network was not selected. 2) The device name is truncated, they read something like "Catfurs LLC Gummiball Grandgree..." and "Dogtails Inc. Bluewhite Bul..." so there was no realistic way to tell which one was ethernet, and which one was wlan. Both interfaces being internal I have no way to tell. Trying to enlarge the field with the mouse didn't seem to change the amount of displayed information. I will attach the 10.2 log files, and for reference the 10.1 log files also. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

2) The device name is truncated, they read something like "Catfurs LLC Gummiball Grandgree..." and "Dogtails Inc. Bluewhite Bul..." so there was no realistic way to tell which one was ethernet, and which one was wlan.
This is done on purpose since some device names tend to be rather long so that their description (together with several other information) would not fit into the frame. It wouldn't hurt that much in QT UI, but would result in texts being truncated in ncurses UI in the console. Now the device name can have up to 30 characters. If you think it's reasonable, I can increase this limit, but I always have to take 80x25 console into consideration ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214897 ------- Comment #11 from rplewe@novell.com 2006-11-13 07:04 MST ------- I understand the limitations. From a user point of view, I would expect the right interface to be selected in the first place (in case where one interface has network, and the other one not, that should be doable. Of course you can get corner cases where that's not the case, but those situations wouldn't get worse than now). In the radio button, "wlan", "100mbit ethernet", "gigabit ethernet" is much more important to me than the manufacturer, model name, BIOS revision, shoe size of main card developer etc. which get truncated before the actual nature of the card might be mentioned. To implement that, I think it is too late for 10.2. For now, perhaps truncating from the last character rather than from the beginning could help. Assuming that the nature of the card appears at the end, which I don't know. And making basic guesses for the autoselection would be nice. People are much more likely to install over ethernet than wlan, I think. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214897 ------- Comment #12 from kmachalkova@novell.com 2006-11-13 07:58 MST ------- With current implementation, the function returning ID of the network device considers two network cards to be equal and returns the first one it finds. It does not take into account whether is it configured/connected, or not. I'll add some kind of logic into this ... As for the amount of information displayed about the device - before alpha5, we used device-id (i.e. something like eth-id-00-xy-...) which was almost unreadable by the users. Now we have 'device name - device type (IP address)' which is imho better, but probably not the best. If you have any suggestion, how can I improve it, let me know. But due to text freeze I'll then fix for SLE SP1 and 10.3 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The best device will probably not be the default one in 100% cases, but there's always a possibility to choose different device if the user doesn't like this one Fixed in yast2-2.14.13 (2.13.88 for SLE) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
