[Bug 779425] New: Logging in for xfce: login hangs for 1 min without disk activity, then xfce starts (happens only after boot).
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=779425 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=779425#c0 Summary: Logging in for xfce: login hangs for 1 min without disk activity, then xfce starts (happens only after boot). Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Xfce AssignedTo: bnc-team-xfce@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: post@jbechtel.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; de) Presto/2.10.289 Version/12.02 That's what I mesured: After boot: Enter password, press enter. ~61 s nothing (password greyed out, cursor not accessible via mouse, but via left/right key you can move the cursor in password field. Button "Anmelden" (login) still clickable) ~12 s load (screen changes, xfce splash, hard disk activity, ...) Then XFCE is loaded. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Case A: Start system, login for XFCE Case B: Start system, login for XFCE, logout, login for XFCE Case C: Start system, login for Gnome, logout, login for XFCE Actual Results: Case A: login takes 1 additional minute Case B: the second login takes only 5 seconds. Case C: the Gnome login is as fast as usual, the second login is fast (without displaying the login manager for long time) Expected Results: Case A: Get XFCE in 12 seconds. (Case B: The second login is OK as it is.) (Case C: This is OK, too.) I recently switched from Gnome to XFCE When I turn on my system, the login manager is in Gnome design - I don't know weather this is right. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I turn on my system, the login manager is in Gnome design - I don't know weather this is right.
The first thing to know would be which display manager you are using and whether it is specific to gdm or lightdm. Please open YaST, select /etc/sysconfig Editor -> on the left side: Desktop -> Display manager -> DISPLAY_MANAGER and change its value to lightdm if it is still set to gdm. Then reboot and see if you can reproduce the issue. (In reply to comment #2)
I was curious and this time, when booting my computer, I waited on minute before entering password and logging in. XFCE started immediately then.
If that is the case, it means that the problem is not related to starting the Xfce session but rather that something during the boot process takes really long or that the display manager causes this. Note that the display manager is started pretty early while the system is still booting. Assuming you're using the default systemd on 12.2 can you please install systemd-analyze, issue the following command in a terminal: systemd-analyze plot >bootchart.svg and attach the resulting file "bootchart.svg" here?
By the way, after going to the text terminal, looking and hearing the disk load one minute later and then going back to graphical screen, there was only the background image. With Alt-F2 I could start xterm, but there was no window decoration and all windows were located at the left-top corner. (I'm not sure weather this is an own bug so I don't report that so far as I usually not log on to text consoles)

BTW, I think this problem is related to bug 742767 and voted for that bug.
This is probably https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5379 and unrelated to booting or starting the session. In order to work around it either disable session saving or start "xfwm4" manually via Alt+F2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks for the tips. I changed the window manager to lightdm and wasn't able to reproduce the delay afterwards :-) [I tried different combinations with login/logout to Gnome/Xfce etc. but the only delay I was able to get was in Gnome which, when logging of, had some time 2 cpu cores fully used: 100% gdm, 50% python, 50% system. But this only happened once.]

(In reply to comment #4) problem and Xfce would have started immediately even without manual wait. At the time I tested manual wait I didn't know that the delay isn't 100% reproducible. I really have the impression that there's some log in manager communication problem.
Can you attach a boothchart after reproducing the problem just to make sure?
So thank you. From my side you can close the bug.
Well, it is still an issue, just not with LightDM but apparently GDM so I'm reassigning to the GDM maintainers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
