[Bug 458254] New: kmail does not display/open some mails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=458254 Summary: kmail does not display/open some mails Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: ASSIGNED Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: pavel.lastovicka@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Sometimes I receive a mail that kmail does not display. The mail view pane is simply empty and when I double click the email nothing happens. This time I had to start Midnight Commander and find and display the email in a text editor to be able to read it! The mail itself was valid, the problem was caused by kmail, not the mail itself. Later I also found that I could copy that mail from inbox folder to another folder and then I could read that mail directly in kmail. The described problem happens on both POP and detached IMAP account. In the latter case I was once able to fix this problem by selecting command "Troubleshoot IMAP cache" from folder's context menu. But for local inbox (for POP accounts), there seems to be no such possibility. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If so please can you attach a problematic mail including all headers (as you found it with mc) to the BR, marked as private? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After your reaction I tried to test the problematic mail again. But after that long time since the problem appeared it is now gone. The mail now displays correctly. My explanation for this is that I restarted the operating system recently. Before that I used to use the system for a long time without logout, using only suspend to disk instead. Please tell if attaching that mail is still relevant. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=458254 User wstephenson@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=458254#c3 --- Comment #3 from Will Stephenson <wstephenson@novell.com> 2009-01-16 05:49:55 MST --- Suspend should not normally cause a problem. However, a failed resume (or killing kmail due to power-off or otherwise) could leave the on-disk indices in an inconsistent state, which might cause this behaviour. Do you think this is a possibility? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I remember correctly I got once kmail hung and tried to kill it. Regretably now is late to find the culprit of this problem. Could you please describe where kmail stores its mail indices if the problem ever happens again so I could possibly check them? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is a simple trick to repair the unreadable mail. - finding the mail in the mail folder - moving it like: cd ~/Mail mv Eingang/cur/1225229158.2942.kNXER Eingang/cur/1225229158.2942.kNXER:2,S - restart KMAIL ?? Normally all mails in ./*/cur/ directory include a colon in file name. The missing colon looks like the bug reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
