https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=351856 Summary: System hangs during boot with XEN enabled kernel Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: cgriffin@novell.com ReportedBy: rob@getuwired.us QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Dell 2950 Clean install OpenSUSE 10.3 fully updated. In all cases, if hangs just after: Loading CPUFreq modules (CPUFreq not supported) The machine has an ATI video controller. 1) With the VESA driver: It hangs with no message Disabling earlyxdm results in the boot completing, but then just the line: Starting service kdm done Then session 7 is a black screen. All text login sessions seem to be OK. 2) With the Radeon or either ATI specific drivers, the following appears: /etc/init.d/earlyxdm: line 108: 2851 Segmentation fault /usr/sbin/ionice -n 2 /sbin/preload /etc/preload.d/kdm Disabling earlyxdm results in a corrupted display (looks like the video is out of sync). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When using KDM the behavior is as above (segfault on earlykdm). Then I installed GDM. Boot with GDM works well, and will present the correct login screen. From there if I try to launch a KDE session, it will load the green screen with the rotating dots, and after a couple of seconds the machine locks up (no mouse movement, no keyboard, ssh connections truncated). The only way is a hard reset. If on the other hand I try to log into XFCE, the desktop will load, but as soon as I click on any button, everything locks up. Booting into single user mode will do funny things with the main console (it stops scrolling at a certain point, you can go forward pressing enter, and it will not let you log in). Entering the second console with alt-F2 will give you a prompt. Typing startkde will hang everything. My problem is that I can't find anything in the logs... no trace of panics or anything. I have formatted everything and reverted to debian, but I thought this may be useful. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Further, attaching a serial cable and collecting Xen output will be necessary; if Xen crashes, the info output is what we'll need. If Xen doesn't crash, you'll need to send 'd' (after switching input to Xen) over the serial line and provide the resulting output. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Rebooting into 'Normal' kernel is fine: /var/log/messages contains no segfault entries. /var/log/boot.omsg ends at "Loading CPUFreq modules (CPUFreq not supported). This is the last on screen message as well before the earlyxdm segfault. I should be able to setup a serial lead to capture data if you require, but do you think that Xen will be outputting at that time? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
