https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=703974 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=703974#c0 Summary: grub error 17 on first boot ( usb stick/drive appliance on a 8 Gb sd-card) Classification: Internal Novell Products Product: openSUSE Build Service Version: master Platform: x86 OS/Version: Windows XP Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: General AssignedTo: adrian@novell.com ReportedBy: niop@gmx.fr QAContact: adrian@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/11.0.696.71 Safari/534.24 ChromePlus/1.6.2.0alpha3 i Create an appliance based SuseLinux 11.4 on SuseStudio Website build an Usb/drive version and apply it on a 8Gb sd-card boot from it, configure various options and see that some packages were missing. I go back to SuseStudio website and add few appliances ( iw, freeglut, some multimedia stuff like gimp ) aplly this new usb/drive version on the same Sd-card, and try to boot from it, and the error message appears "grub error 17" The appliance works on the testdrive version, and also on Virtualbox ( with the iso build or Vmware build option ) It seems that the MBR of the Sd-card doesn't change I apply each build either with : . Win32diskimager . ImageAll . dd ( windows version with bs=1M and --progess options ), and with the new build, an error occurs at the end of the process frequently Trying to reinitialize the MBR with mbrfix.exe /drive 1 fixmbr before applying the new build, and the result is that the boot process freezes at the begining with "Grub _" and nothing else, no error message the only appliance that works at 100% is : https://susegallery.com/a/4bmxDc/niops-linux ImageAll open each raw file and show that it's an ext2/ext3 partition ( active ) with the correct size Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. create a kde4 based appliance on susestudio website, build an usb/drive version 2. uncompress it and apply the raw file on a sd-card ( or usb flash drive ) ( dd if=xxxxx.raw of=\\.\e: bs=1M --progress 3. boot on the sd-card to finalize the install process 4. add a few packages on this appliance with susestudio and build again this appliance 5. use dd again to apply this new appliance, and try to boot from this media Actual Results: try to fix mbr with mbrfix under windows apply again the raw file with dd for windows Expected Results: Grub freezes without error message -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
