[Bug 276529] New: System freeze on boot after loading sis900 module
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276529 Summary: System freeze on boot after loading sis900 module Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: skh@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I boot from the mini iso at /mounts/dist/install/openSUSE-10.3-Alpha4/openSUSE-10.3-Alpha4-i386-mini.iso System boots until the sis900 kernel module is loaded, then freezes after "Sending DHCP request" (Cursor blinks a few times and then stops.) Booting with broken_modules=sis900 works, then the installer aborts due to missing SLP install source as expected. chomsky:/suse/skh # hwinfo --netcard 20: PCI 04.0: 0200 Ethernet controller [Created at pci.288] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_1039_900 Unique ID: 8otl.a+wEHeXLrN1 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:04.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:04.0 Hardware Class: network Model: "ASRock In SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet" Vendor: pci 0x1039 "Silicon Integrated Systems Corp." https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276529 ------- Comment #3 from skh@novell.com 2007-05-23 09:28 MST ------- I've tracked this further down, (thanks Rudi!): the kernel on the booting (build 307 install CD) and the non-booting (alpha4 mini iso) CDs are the same. The only difference is that some of the modules.* files are differently sorted. I'm tracking down now which of the files makes the difference. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276529 ------- Comment #4 from skh@novell.com 2007-05-24 03:28 MST ------- The affected files are: modules.alias modules.dep modules.pcimap modules.symbols modules.usbmap The only difference is the order of the entries. When I sort the files' contents, they are identical. ------------ I can still reproduce the problem with kernel-default-2.6.21-20070523094404 I'll attach boot.msg's from kernel-default-2.6.21-20070523094404 (not working) and kernel-default-2.6.21_rc5_git13-2 (working). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It could be done by specifying broken_modules=sis900 and then loading the module by hand (modprobe sis900_debug=24775). Invoke "ifup eth0" afterwards. Please do this for both kernels (working and nonworking) and send resulting boot.msgs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So I moved the sis900.ko module away to prevent it from loading during boot, and later loaded it manually with # modprobe sis900 sis900_debug=24775 The system freezes during the loading of the module, not during ifup, and there's nothing in /var/log/messages or boot.msg -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
