[Bug 808543] New: Default keyboard layout for dutch users now US International instead of US English
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808543 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808543#c0 Summary: Default keyboard layout for dutch users now US International instead of US English Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: knurpht@glosscomputer.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.32 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/27.0.1425.0 Safari/537.32 SUSE/27.0.1425.0 On openSUSE 12.3 GM the default keyboard layout after choosing Dutch as the language is US International. Wrong, we shouldn't have a windows feature, we should have the "linux" way, i.e. use a compose key to create composed characters. After selection compose key doesn't work anymore. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install, select Dutch as the language, US International is auto-selected 2.Fix: Yast - System - System keyboard layout to US English 3.All back to normal Actual Results: No compose key, wrong keyboard layout for a linux user. Expected Results: US English as the default for dutch users. They can set the US International layout in their desktop if they want windows behaviour. I know some people have been putting pressure to change this, one in peticular. We've tried to stop this when discussing it on a dutch launch party. Many of us there agreed it should never be US International. Linux is not windows. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Not being able to type your normal key combinations to get things like ş ⁶ and what all is very frustrating. Especialy if it comes after a succesfull upgrading to 12.3 and then, at your first document, you can not get the characters you need. Most people will not even understand what happened and hat a change in the keyboard layout could cure this. Result: frustrated users at forums, etc. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

New Dutch Linux users (only used to Windows) and people who come from Ubuntu or Linux Mint, expect a US International keyboard layout. The current default layout is a huge improvement for Dutch users and will make the switch to openSUSE much smoother and easier for them. Experienced users know how to tweak their system anyway, so for them it's no real problem to simply change the layout as they see fit. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

US International was added just recently, based on bug 774918. I'm not the one who shoud decide, I really do not have any opinion about this issue. But I do not like getting bugs for every change we do here. So please, discuss it in Dutch users community, involve more users, and when you are done, come with new proposal (if any). Until that, I'll close this bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
