[Bug 804258] New: Complete Failure of a Standard Non-Automated Installation on X_64 Hardware Requiring Many Many Manual Restarts of Installation from HDD
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=804258 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=804258#c0 Summary: Complete Failure of a Standard Non-Automated Installation on X_64 Hardware Requiring Many Many Manual Restarts of Installation from HDD Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: secure@aphofis.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=525084) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=525084) yast2-logs-all User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0 I initiated a standard Non-Automated 12.1 Installation on my X_64 Hardware. During the install the video became completely corrupted so I initiated a system restart and was lucky that a HDD boot config was already written to HDD. There were another 2 instances where this standard Non-automotive Installation either failed due video corruption or any other number of faults. The online update errors in the log files I have corrected my end...see my Bug relating to SMIME File Integrity. After a complete massive online update along with mandatory reboot and online update continues the windowing system is still unstable and takes for ever to load from boot instructions...There are so so so many massive additional instructions to boot a 12.1 X_64 Installation. I hope my yast2 logs will show you my boot log...if not please specify what boot logs may help you. Hitting ESC during boot from HDD slows the boot process down so so much and I can just make out a few 'failed' entries amongst the hugely massive default boot instruction that make 11.4 look small. The only reason for me updating from 11.4 was due to most repositories no longer support 11.4 files. 11.4 was so so so very stable in its windowing manager and never fell over where as now I get kde crash handler errors and menu freeze error all the time during usage Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: I hope my yast2 logs will show you my boot log...if not please specify what boot logs may help you. Just curious as to wjhy we didn't have an 11.5 version. Installation failing more than 3 times I consider a major issue...let me know how to help so we can get this fixed and stable in X_64 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do not think it makes sense to hunt bugs for outdated 12.1
The issue is with the Non-automated Installation Process...If 12.1-3 have the same installation process I cannot understand why the reason code for closure. Its not that I have had to hunt down these many faults...far from it! The installation failed...its that simple and could not dynamically correct the installation process to be able to cope for many many reasons tat only the logs will show. The bottom line is that on a standard non-automated installation the installation process fell over many times and could not dynamically self correct a standard Installation. We need to work out why it failed and make provision for the routine to auto accommodate and self correct when X an environment caused complete failure. I would ask, therefore, for this decision of WONTFIX to be re-assessed and if after further consultation its deemed as WONTFIX, please reinstate the reason code and give us all a bit more logic than the version is not supported. I would suggest this is version independent, unless you have substantially changed the Installation routine in 12.2and onwards. The spin off from this bug, if left as WONTFIX, will have consequences with 12.2,3,4 and finally SLES/D 12.0 when it comes out -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
