I'll be able to access this machine locally in few months or else I need to find another machine and modem... Anyway, if you can confirm that smpppd requires variable AUTO_RECONNECT_EXITS in provider file to perform the reconnection, it should be easy to see from YaST sources that it never provides this variable. I'll add Ludvig Nussel as CC to this because he seems to maintain smpppd.
