Is that something to worry about? I have the following USB devices connected: - a harddisk - a headset - a keyboard - a mouse The problem was exactly the same with SUSE Linux 10.1. I didn't report it because I hoped it would go away when updating to openSUSE 10.2. But the messages are still there, no change at all. I already had the harddisk and the keyboard connected while using SUSE Linux 10.1, I added the mouse and the USB headset after updating to openSUSE 10.2. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #10 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-02-02 06:59 MST ------- I'm in the office now and the computer is at home, therefore I cannot look at the machine (I can access it via the network though). Therefore this is from memory: 4 USB sockets are at the backside of the machine, one of them is used for the hardisc, the other for the keyboard. The mouse is plugged into the USB hub built into the keyboard. Another USB socket is at the front side of the computer build into the case of the card reader. There I have connected the USB headset. I.e. I think I have 5 sockets total at the machine and 3 are used. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #13 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-02-06 06:51 MST ------- I experimented again today and found that the USB headset seems to cause the problem after all. That is weird because in comment #0 I wrote that I had added the headseat after updating to openSUSE 10.2 and the problems were there already with SUSE Linux 10.1. Certainly the problems were ther with SUSE Linux 10.1 but maybe I dindn't remember correctly when I added the USB headset. Anyway, I found now - the messages go away if I unplug the USB headset. - it doesn't matter to which USB socket I connect the USB headset the messages appear always when it is connected - I have tried to remove the other USB devices (Keyboard, mouse, USB harddisk). This doesn't help, as soon as the USB headset is connected, the messages appear. - I thought that the USB headset might be damaged. I have 3 of these USB headset which are exactly the same brand and model. I tried one of the others and the same messages appeared. - I have another one of these headsets connected to the computer in my office, there the messages do *not* appear. So what is the problem? Is there a design problem with the headset? Then why does it work in the office? Or has my computer at home much less power on the USB ports then the computer in my office? Would adding a USB hub with extra power and connecting the headset to such a hub solve the problem? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #15 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-02-06 10:32 MST ------- In the office I am using an USB 1.1 4x hub *without* extra power, which is of course connected only to one USB socket in the computer. USB Headset, mouse, and keyboard are connected to this hub. This works and I don't get the "overcurrent" messages in /var/log/messages. Why does this work? Isn't more electrical power drawn from the USB socket in the computer in my office because it has to supply mouse and keyboard in addition to the headset? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #18 from oneukum@novell.com 2007-02-07 06:10 MST ------- Generally not, but they draw power. Computers differ a bit. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #19 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-02-09 09:34 MST ------- I don't yet have a USB hub with extra power. But I have a 4 port USB hub which has an Y-shaped cable to be plugged into 2 USB sockets at the computer. I thought that this might double the power available for the Headset if I connect the Headset to this hub. But it didn't help, the messages in /var/log/messages are still the same. I'll order a PCI card with a 5 port USB hub and see whether that helps. I hope that such a type of hub should gets enough power via the PCI bus so I can avoid yet another external power supply. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #20 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-02-13 19:07 MST ------- The PCI card with the 5 port USB hub arrived and I tried it today. Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem because my machine didn't even boot anymore when the card was installed. The last messages which showed up on the console while booting had something to do with "...new USB device found..." Then the boot process stopped. Apparently the machine was completely frozen because I could not toggle the Numlock LED with the Numlock Key anymore. This was possible during the boot process until the time when the boot process stopped when it became impossible (I tried that a few times, it was repeatable). Then I removed the card again because I needed the computer. I have been told that removing some other cards (for example a SCSI adapter I don't need anymore) and trying other PCI slots might make a difference. I'll try that tomorrow. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241368 ------- Comment #22 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-05-07 07:59 MST ------- It took a long time until I got around doing that, but yesterday I finally removed the SCSI adapter and added a the PCI card with the 5 port USB hub again (which I mentioned in comment #20). Now, the machine *did* boot without problems and the error messages "... over-current change on port ..." do *not* appear anymore in /var/log/messages. I think this is quite weird because all I did is to remove the SCSI card and insert the USB Hub PCI card. The USB Hub PCI card is *not* used, all USB devices are still connected to the USB ports on the mainboard. Nevertheless the error messages are gone. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
