[Bug 327991] New: nv driver fallbacks to extremely low resolution
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=327991 Summary: nv driver fallbacks to extremely low resolution Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: arahne@arahne.si QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer Created an attachment (id=174457) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=174457) Xorg log file with nv driver for Nvidia 8800 with failing 2560x1600 resolution Grahpics card: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS Monitor: HP LP3065 driver: nv Card is properly recognized. Monitor is not recognized, so I configure it as Dell 3007WFP (uses same LCD as the HP model) with native resolution 2560x1600 but on testing and any other configuration, it lowers the resolution to 1240x800, and I found no way to get anything more than this. Note that I do not use Nvidia binary driver, but the open souce nv driver. If I install the Nvidia binary driver, it is able to convert the Xorg file into working one without going into SAX2, so I suspect the problem lies in nv driver, not in the Xorg configuration file. I include the Xorg log file. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

High resolutions like 2560x1600 are not possible using analog cable or older digital cables. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So this depends on the graphics card (and not on the GPU). Check with "hwinfo --framebuffer" which are these. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I attach the requested information. <blog> I currently run nvidia binary driver, so everything works. The above bug report was "just" a demonstration that in many cases, we can not get any reasonable results from the nv driver. Not for 3D, just for plain old 2D picture appropriate for a given monitor and graphics card. This is why I was pressing so much for an easy installation of nvidia driver. </blog> -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=327991#c7 --- Comment #7 from Stefan Dirsch <sndirsch@novell.com> 2007-10-06 15:53:04 MST --- 2560x1600 is not among the resolutions supported by the VBIOS. Therefore the nv driver does not support it via DVI. I'm aware of the limitations of the nv driver. Installation of nvidia driver is rather easy now after adding the repository. http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
