[Bug 215960] New: Suggestion for unique names under /etc/cron.daily
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215960 Summary: Suggestion for unique names under /etc/cron.daily Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at cron.daily: total 48 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2780 2006-10-24 06:27 beagle-crawl-system -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 393 2006-10-23 16:40 logrotate -rwxr--r-- 1 root root 948 2006-10-23 17:31 suse-clean_catman -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1875 2003-09-01 13:10 suse.de-backup-rc.config -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2059 2003-09-08 15:50 suse.de-backup-rpmdb -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 566 2004-07-23 12:38 suse.de-check-battery -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1713 2006-10-23 16:51 suse.de-clean-core -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1320 2005-07-27 15:28 suse.de-clean-tmp -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 371 2003-09-01 13:10 suse.de-cron-local -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1538 2006-10-23 16:51 suse.de-updatedb -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 42 2006-10-23 16:53 suse.de-update-preload -rwxr--r-- 1 root root 1196 2006-10-23 17:31 suse-do_mandb Except the first two an interesting situation arises: scripts whose names starting with 'suse-' are chmod-ed to 744 and others with 'suse.de-' are with 755. Would be not better to call everything as suse-whatever or even better opensuse-something? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215960 ------- Comment #1 from balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at 2006-10-27 16:02 MST ------- Yeah, another example is e.g. -rwxr-x--- 1 root root 46 2006-10-23 18:04 /etc/cron.daily/01-rkhunter , and it would not harm to make it even /etc/cron.daily/openSUSE-rkhunter -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215960 ------- Comment #2 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-27 16:11 MST ------- Let's not introduce upgrade problems shortly before the release with these not-quite-necessary renamings. The suse.de-* script names are fine because suse.de is meant to be a vendor prefix, and the vendor is indeed still suse.de. Doing s/suse/openSUSE/ would not only introduce an upgrade problem, but also an inconsistency with the enterprise distributions because the string "openSUSE" is not appropriate there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This does not depend on the name. suse.de is our official vendor prefix. But this does of course not affect LSB registered scripts like logrotate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215960 ------- Comment #5 from mkoenig@novell.com 2006-11-08 03:56 MST ------- I do not think there is a unique answer. That is the decision of the corresponding package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215960 ------- Comment #6 from balazs.melikant@univie.ac.at 2006-11-09 13:18 MST ------- If I understood it correctly, between "suse-" and "suse.de-" daily cron job names there are no crucial differences, only the prefix differs slightly. I would assume that at least "suse-" prefixes could be obsoleted and unified to "suse.de-"; would that cause the above mentioned update problem, so that's why in fact they were never touched?! To be honest I would also chose "01-rkhunter" -> "suse-rkhunter". If you think its worth to do it, I could file a separated bug report as enhancement, just for that. (Anyway, thanks for clarifying the points about both LSB and enterprise product(s) vs. the "opensuse-" prefix...) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215960 mkoenig@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |INVALID ------- Comment #7 from mkoenig@novell.com 2006-11-13 03:49 MST ------- Please note, that it is the responsibility of the packages which install the cron scripts how to name them. If you think the script names of individual packages should be renamed, please file a bug for each of the package which the script actually belongs to. I will close this resolved invalid, because it is not a cron bug at all and this way I cannot reassign it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
