I will follow your test cases tonight, it's a shame we don't use Linux at work, I would have been able to do it right away. You are right, I do see now the very slight right shifting of the circumflex on a caps lock Ô. My bad I did not notice before. To type them I use an english kbd layout for which I hit the ALT-SHIFT buttons to shift the language (locale) to CANADIAN-FRENCH. You know what, I could try another type of French layout, like FRANCE-FRENCH or something. I will give more info of the exact locale tonight and also displaying the test email you sent me. That test email you sent I do see the circumflexes shifted in gmail email client. I will see tonight if the same occurs in KMail. Updates on this. I did send to myself an HTML msg and the misrendered ô did show this time. It was fine in HTML but on this email it was misrendered. I think I know why, might be related to the fact LUCIDA GRANDE font does not seem to support HTML (kmail does not compose HTML even if I force it to using that font) so it shows it's plain/txt character in an html msg, if that's theoretically possible, just shooting in the dark here. More details later below. Other tests: - Multiple fonts: I have tried some other fonts and YES that does make a difference. I can attach a screenshot if required. Some other fonts are working good (though not 100% perfect) or bad, depending which I choose. - Mike test email: Mike, FWDing your email from gmail to my kmail account did show the non-combined ô misrendered the exact same way as seen in gmail. In oowriter, using LUCIDA GRANDE misrenders the ô. Using LUCIDA SANS does not misrender (1-2 pixel only). But while I see my misrendered and correctly rendered ô, if I zoom in from 100% to say 150 or 200% my oowriter document, even the LUCIDA GRANDE will show perfectly rendered! And I get the same good results if I zoom out (say 100% to 75%). And, if I type the ô in any other zoom value BUT 100%, it works out fine! How interesting! Do you need screenshots of that? Short conclusion: After seeing that LUCIDA SANS renders correctly the character and other french accents as well, since LUCIDA SANS is the same looking font as LUCIDA GRANDE, I find it the perfect workaround for this issue. I will change all my fonts from GRANDE to SANS and the ô will always get rendered correctly, even as PLAIN/TXT. Also I gain the fact that HTML composing is possible with LUCIDA SANS whereas with LUCIDA GRANDE it was always defaulting PLAIN/TXT (might be a different bug if it is one, or that font does not support HTML). Now up to this point, should I check closely my locale (currently CANADA-FR) and try out others? For me using a different font that settles the issue is fine, but if you consider there is something that should be corrected, please tell me if I should try other tests to help out. It works for me in kmail (both from KDE3 and from KDE4) and also in /usr/bin/qtconfig (Qt4) and /usr/lib/qt3/bin/qtconfig (Qt3). Works both for the combined and non-combined ô. I tried many sizes and hinting settings but I really cannot reproduce any problem using that font. It works for me in OpenOffice as well. Font rendering issues often disappear when the size is increased. Rendering a font into a small size is difficult because one cannot use many pixels. Imperfections which are due to the limited number of available pixels go a way if the size is increased.
