https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=417843 Summary: Yast-gtk installer doesn't show conflicts after the first time a conflict dialog is shown Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alberto.passalacqua@tin.it QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer I was trying to install some package, and one of them conflicted with an already installed package. I clicked on "Cancel" to skip the package. Trying a second time to select the package doesn't show the list of conflicts anymore, but an empty dialog (see attachments). Your bug trigger should be more of a coincidence or an artifact of the effect of such action in the stack. The real culprit here should be the same as bug 399465. If you could try out the SVN code that would be greatly appreciated though. Instructions: 1. Make sure you have installed: g++, gtk2-devel, yast2-devtools, yast2-core-devel, libzypp-devel (possibly configure may report more...) 2. Download it: svn checkout http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/yast/trunk/gtk/ yast-gtk 3. Compile it: cd yast-gtk make -f Makefile.cvs make && sudo make install *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 399465 *** https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=399465 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm sorry, but I don't want to try the SVN version on this system (the only 11.0 I have) because it is the laptop I work on. I have fixed switching back to YaST-qt again, as it happened in 10.3. I take advantage of this bug report to give a suggestion for the next openSUSE release. I'm sure it will be ignored, but it's worth to try. Please drop yast-gtk. There are mainly three reasons for this: - It is a duplicate effort now that qt4 allows theming. - It is clearly behind the qt version in terms of quality, considering the problems it had when 11.0 was released, and those which are still affecting it. - It failed the goal of providing an _identical_ gtk interface for YaST, which was the original idea. This generate inconsistency in the distribution management tool for users of the two DE's. My scope is only the yast2-gtk SVN: I don't integrate it into opensuse, I don't even package it. Since I'm not subscribed to the mentioned mailing list, allow me to come to the yast2-gtk rescue here. :) Note though I don't care much if yast2-gtk gets stripped out of opensuse: I feel responsible in some way to keep maintaining it, so you would take a burden out of my shoulders. First let me address the quality complaint, since that one gets personal. ;) If you look at a bunch of the ugly reports, most of them should have been from during the 11.0 development phase and fixed promptly. The fixes were just left out of the final release as I guess the builds were based from some 11.0 branch. But true enough, yast2-gtk will always be at a disadvantage and more prone to bugs, since I don't continually follow the changes to the Yast UI framework, unlike the Qt maintainer, which is the same that makes the said changes to the framework, which we sometimes have to go to longer extents to support in gtk. I personally think our code base is superior though, and an indicator of that is that it is much smaller in size due to its reusability in design of which Michael Meeks is to be complimented for. I guess the most outstanding argument in favor of the -gtk interface is the accessibility support. Our constituency is probably pretty small here -- I only remember getting feedback from one user who is completely dependent on it -- but it's a pretty exciting thing to offer nevertheless. I know Qt4 was going to support ATK, so that might not be an unique selling point by now. The integration with Gnome is admittedly lacking, which would require some fundamental work to tackle, but there is potential for that, and there is already some small additions. The most substantial differences are the package management, and in SVN the wizard subtitles. However, there is only me to give some breadth to -gtk, so it has been stagnating, and may die off in the future. The Qt UI has been stale for a long time -- those guys were very quick to dismiss any feature request --, but it got a lot of attention on its last installment, and it seems promising. As you say, Qt4 theming is better integrated with Gnome now, offering a Clearlooks theme. I have read there is actually a Trolltech project to make Qt using GTK to render itself. I wish they would have looked at this toy of mine: http://gtk4qt.sourceforge.net/ . ;) Not sure what to add. I wish people could check the SVN version because I think it's much more reliable, but if they're having problems with the GTK UI, it's not reasonable at all to drop it, and it might be inevitable in the future. Please post a reference to this bug there, or just a copy of this post (with my email, if someone wishes some information). I reply here because you're not reading the ML. First of all, I didn't want to make it personal at all. In the quality comment I simply meant that Yast-gtk is not mature enough. I was one of its supporters at the beginning, if you remember :-) I was not complaining at all about the speed of fixes: you're probably the faster openSUSE/N developer I know when it comes to fix bugs! What I was complaining about is that a development version of YaST (as -gtk is for me) was introduced in openSUSE final release as default. On one hand it improves the look, but on the other the bugs make our life harder. About the SVN, if it is better, it is worth to push it as a patch, or at least to patch the current version in 11.0 to fix the issues (the one reported by me about the installer is still there, and I can reproduce it everytime). I have posted the idea of dropping YaST-Gtk in 11.1 here in the Ideas list http://en.opensuse.org/Ideas/11.1#YaST with a link to this bug. I'm not subscribed to ML myself.
