Configuration : ======== Using LVM for all disks, except the /boot Issue : ===== After selecting which Kernel to boot in Grub (2.6.27.25-0.1), initrd starts, but I get warnings for missing modules : FATAL : Module processor not found FATAL : Module thermal not found FATAL : Module aic79xx not found FATAL : Module linear not found Then the system starts to look for LVM groups, but does not find anything. Interesting is that WinXP continued to work as before (the dual boot was working OK with previous Kernel version). So I don't expect a hardware problem. Debugging is made difficult by the fact that I can not boot the system from the hard-drive in Linux anymore (automatic updates do not create a fall-back boot entry to last known-good kernel). Found however that /lib/mkinitrd/scripts contains many setup*.sh scripts ... Then chrooted to /mnt and launcked mkinitrd. The output of this command is in the first attachment 'mkinitrd-1.log'. Then I noticed that 'mkinitrd' complained it was not finding the original '/boot'. So I mounted the boot partition and ran 'mkinitrd' again and stored the output in attachment 'mkinitrd-2.log'. I noticed that 'mkinitrd' complains about modules it can not find. Most of those modules should be present. It looks as though the kernel update failed to install a bunch of modules. If rpm -V kernel-default gives a bunch of output, reinstall the original kernel from the media, boot, and run the update again. I followed your advice to boot with the rescue system. I mounted all the devices you mentionned in your comment #3, plus all other volumes I have for '/usr', '/var', '/etc', '/home', '/tmp', '/srv', and also the partition for '/boot'. Then I did the 'chroot'. The mkinitrd was still complaining about missing modules The "rpm -V kernel-default" command was giving me one line with "missing dependencies". So I went on to re-install the kernel-default, but as I had only a network install CD, I had to restart all services (a matter of trial and error). Finally I could start yast2, download the latest kernel version (2.6.27.29-0.1-default x86_64), install it, checked that mkinitrd was happy, rebooted and all seems now OK. Thanks for your help, the decisive thing was the indication on how to chroot. But for it to work properly, you'd need to list also all KMPs there. In 11.3, this will be handled better (multiversion = kernel or something like that). Regarding the original problem, this was probably an incomplete update (missing kernel-default-base??), in 11.2, the kernel will be in a single package again, which should lower the chance for such errors. Better multiversion support in zypp is planner for 11.3.
