[Bug 419250] New: ohci-hcd regularly dies with NVidia GeForce 8300 chipset (x86_64)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=419250 User sbrandt@gmx.de added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=419250#c214247 Summary: ohci-hcd regularly dies with NVidia GeForce 8300 chipset (x86_64) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sbrandt@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User My problem is very similar to bug #214247 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=214247). Using mouse and/or keyboard via USB, I get regular lockups ... no reaction from mouse/keyboard, unloading the ohci-hcd hangs indefinitely, so does lsusb, cat /proc/bus/usb/devices, and any other access to the ohci subsystem. ehci/high-speed (2.0) devices still run. The hanging processes cannot be killed (-9); shutdown (umount /) thus fails. Similar things happen with certain usb 2.0 devices, e.g., a smart card reader that switches from usb 2.0/ehci to usb 1.1/ohci when an sd-card is inserted, and then kills the ohci. The same card reader giving read errors after ~400MB when I got it to run on ehci. A USB-serial converter is also apt to kill the ohci on plugging in, or a few minutes later. Using an ps/2 keyboard, the death occurs less often, but still does (mouse, etc.). Using certain ports, sometimes only part of the ohci crashes, i.e., the usb-serial hangs, the mouse still works until I try to unload the ohci-hcd (probably due to the two different OHCI controllers as listed below). System: OpenSUSE 11.0 x86_64 kernel-default-2.6.25.11-0.1 (x86_64) (same with previous 2.6.25.9-0.2) ASUS M3N-H/HDMI with NVIDIA GeForce 8300 chipset AMD PhenomX4 9740 4GB RAM lspci related to USB: 00:02.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 077b (rev a1) MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller GeForce 8200 / nForce 730a (http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/iii/?i=10de) 00:02.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 077c (rev a1) MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller GeForce 8200 / nForce 730a 00:04.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 077d (rev a1) MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller GeForce 8200 / nForce 730a 00:04.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 077e (rev a1) MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller GeForce 8200 / nForce 730a After inserting the PCI USB 2.0 card from my old machine, no problems have been detected for hours, even stress-testing the devices that failed always and fast before (the PCI card is UHCI+EHCI, though). The bug seems very similar to the above mentioned #214247, where the same symptoms were detected with an nForce4 (430) chipset. I will attach the log output, yet I was unable to detect any relevant information there ... no error messages or such. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

During the months, I *never* had any problem with the UHCI/EHCI, unless OHCI was alread hanging. The similiarity with bug #370872 is rather a consequence, not the problem itself, I believe. The stack trace I gave with comment #18 is in so far misleading, as I already tried to unload the ohci-hcd there. My guess is, the ohci interrupts get lost (somehow?); the unability to unload the driver module follows from there. Thus, the usb-related stack traces from comment #21 might be more exact, as they show threads hanging in the usb subsystem itself, but not in the OHCI subsystem ... hints at losing interrupts, to me. I will also apply the patch from bug #370872 and see what happens. System: OpenSUSE 11.0 x86_64 kernel-default-2.6.25.11-0.1 (x86_64) (I have also tried 2.6.25.18) ASUS M3N78-EM with NVIDIA GeForce 8300 chipset AMD PhenomX4 9850 4GB RAM I also use the proprietary nvidia module. I have a ps/2 keyboard and USB mouse. Symptoms: The mouse pointer freezes once in a while. Like every few hours. (So it is too rare to investigate easily, but too frequent to use the machine comfortably.) Only a reboot helps bring it back again. The keyboard still works and so does everything else, so one can still start applications (like a browser and a konsole) and use them. But X in itself cannot be killed, if I try to go to the console with CtrlAltF1 I just get a permanent black screen. (But the console window under X works of course). dmesg and /var/log/messages do not show anything very specific (tell me if you want to see them). modprobe -r ohci_hcd hangs, but I can still use a pendrive after ohci dies, so evidently ehci is allright. That's all I can think of at the moment. But I guess this should rule out the "loose cable" option. I mean, it's good to know that the problem isn't mine only, but seems to be reproducible on another board with the same chipset. Your symptoms look exactly like mine ... just, that I can decide whether I want to work (ps/2 keyboard and all usb devices on the PCI card) or rather want to crash the system (all on onboard USB) .. usually doesn't take a few hours, then. With just the mouse, though, this would fit. Yes, checked the cabling, though there is not much to check - the USB ports are all directly on the back panel of the board; the problem occurs with more than one usb gadget, thus, at least two or even three usb cables would have to be defect. Also, neither the port nor the bus influences the problem, so, it looks like something that touches both buses/hcd the same way ... I checked the power connectors; if it is a power problem, I'd rather guess the power supply itself ... it's a "430W Seasonic M12II SLI ATX/EPS 120er Lüfter, Stecksystem, 80plus, 2*12V, SLI, 2*PCI-E, 6*SATA, 100-240V" ... http://www.seasonicusa.com/M12II.htm .. Predecessor boards (GeForce MCP51, some ASUS M2N-###, actually) had "just" two USB controllers, w/o any direct E/OHCI information: 00:0b.0 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP51 USB Controller (rev a3) 00:0b.1 USB Controller: nVidia Corporation MCP51 USB Controller (rev a3) while the 8300/8200/MCP78S has four ... two OHCI and EHCI, each ... 077b MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller 077c MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller 077d MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller 077e MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller Maybe the E/OHCI driver is unable to cope with two controllers that are responsible for the same "devices" (both host devices and gadgets)?
