[Bug 472268] New: Introduce Wen Quan Yi Chinese fonts
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=472268 Summary: Introduce Wen Quan Yi Chinese fonts Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bgn66922@163.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/4.2; Linux) KHTML/4.2.0 (like Gecko) SUSE As the non-free Founder fonts are removed since openSUSE 11.1, openSUSE is lack of good-looking Simplified Chinese fonts. Wen Quan Yi (http://wqy.sourceforge.net/en/) project provides some opensource Chinese fonts such as "Zen Hei", a.k.a Sans-Serif (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128192&package_id=242056) and "Bitmap Song", a.k.a Serif (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128192&package_id=156288) These fonts have better appearance than current Arphic fonts. Therefore openSUSE could include them and use "Zen Hei" as default Simplified Chinese font. As far as I know, some other major linux distributions like Fedora, Ubuntu and Mandriva also use "Zen Hei" as default. Somebody should evaluate whether these fonts look really nicer than the arphic fonts and if the coverage is good enough. Currently our Chinese default fonts is "AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni" from the package ttf-arphic-uming-0.1.20060928-1.40. If "Zen Hei" is nicer, a new package should be added and the family name of the font should be inserted in /etc/fonts/suse-post-user.conf between FZSongTi and "AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni": <family>FZSongTi</family> ... insert here ... <family>AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni</family> Hu Jiaqi, do I understand you correctly that you want "Zen Hei" as the default for "sans-serif" and "monospace" and "Bitmap Song" as the default for "serif"? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

if the coverage is good enough By now, Zen Hei has more than 20924 Chinese characters (including all GBK/Big5 characters) as well as japanese/korean and other languages. It is enough for use. Bitmap Song has more (about 27000).
do I understand you correctly that you want "Zen Hei" as the default for "sans-serif" and "monospace" and "Bitmap Song" as the default for "serif"? I suggest "Zen Hei" as default "sans-serif" and "monospace". But just keep "AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni" for "serif" because "Bitmap Song" is not scalable.
whether these fonts look really nicer than the arphic fonts This is really a matter of taste. But as I know, most people prefer WenQuanYi Fonts. Also, these fonts are under continuous development and are published under GPL.
By the way, please use DejaVu/Liberation etc fonts for latin characters even in Chinese LANG environment because they look much better than those included in Chinese fonts. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
