[Bug 534741] New: r8169 driver is badly outdated
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=534741 Summary: r8169 driver is badly outdated Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: f+novell@congenio.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=315494) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=315494) Modified version of r8169.c User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090729 Firefox/3.5.2 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) The r8169 delivery with stock 11.1 is badly outdated. It cannot handle newer hardware revisions of the Realtek 8168/8111 series, in my case an R8168(D) on an Intel DG41MJ board. I have seen that other boards are affected as well. The driver loads seemingly, but the hardware is not initialized correctly. This leads even to postponed errors, because on a reboot, the network card is not recognized at all! This is a big problem even for installation (I tried over the network, to no avail) and difficult to fix, because the driver is in the initrd. Also, the kind (-default vs. -pae) and version (2.6.27.7 vs. current 2.6.27.29) is difficult to handle, because on kernel compilation, the running kernel is used as a template. However, I have a fix (see attachment). I used the stock 2.6.30.5 version of r8169.c and modified it to get rid of the newer network API specifics. It incorporates a lot of fixes and supports newer revisions of the Realtek chips. You could incorporate this into the next kernel release, but it would be better if it was back-ported to the frist release and the installation initrd was modified, too. Might be a good idea to check this for 11.2 as well. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use newer Realtek hardware 2. Try bringing up the network 3. Module is loaded, no RX packets are seen. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
