[Bug 734694] New: GNOME 3 desktop fails to load after reinstall of nouveau driver.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734694 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=734694#c0 Summary: GNOME 3 desktop fails to load after reinstall of nouveau driver. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: waveclaw@hotmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=465737) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=465737) dmesg, error logs, configuration data, .xsession-errors, Xorg.0.log and various xorg.confs User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/15.0.874.121 Safari/535.2 While KDE and LXDE desktops are able to start, GNOME 3 desktop fails to load or enter failback mode after a binary driver was installed then removed. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Installed a working GNOME 3 desktop with nouveau driver (only working on 1 HDMI monitor or the other.) 2. Installed nVidia driver from dowloads.nvidia.com 3. Configured /etc/X11/xorg.conf to enable wine to run and use multiple monitors to be used. 4. Reboot to new driver. 5. KDE loads and can use OpenGL or Xrender backend for kwin. LXDE loads. 6. GNOME 3 fails to start or enter failback mode. Bails to back to kdm login. 7. Removed nVidia driver and all packages 8. Removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf 9. Reboot 10. Attempt to login with various desktops, observe result. Actual Results: GNOME 3 only loads background, never displays panel or starts startup applications. KDE able to load, LXDE able to load. kdm working as before. Can only use 1 or other monitor as with clean installation. Expected Results: GNOME 3 load normally as before the installation and removal of binary driver or GNOME 3 to enter failback mode as during binary driver installation. Other desktops continue to work fine. KDE works with OpenGL or Xrender backend for kwin. Desktop Effects to not work and multiple monitors badly supported (see bug 679268.) Also, I have re-installed the proprietary driver. Using a fresh user with no prior desktop login on the system also replicates the error. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Try zypper in --force xorg-x11-server mesa and then reboot also make sure you don't have no kms in initrid set to yes -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have switched back to the nVidia driver as I have some 30 applications, not all of them games, that require wine to work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Of course the best way to run GNOME applications would be under GNOME and not under other alien Desktop Environments. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've also noticed that the GNOME applications won't take keyboard focus properly. Sometimes the buttons cannot be clicked on. dbus-launch gedit In KDE launches a instance of gedit that can be typed into, but the buttons for save, undo, etc cannot be clicked on until you right click in the window. The resulting pop-up save dialog is completely unusable. The 'Close without Saving' dialog has to be tabbed to the correct option to leave the program without using xkill on it. gnome-terminal can be typed into, but anything that pops up a window doesn't work correctly or requires odd right clicking first to click on something. Funnily enough, the terminator app that just wraps a gnome-terminal works fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
