[Bug 726751] New: System successfully reboot into stage 2 of installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726751 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726751#c0 Summary: System successfully reboot into stage 2 of installation Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: howard.bryan.webb@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Not sure if this is a yast problem, a kernel problem, an installation problem, or some other problem. Reroute component as you see fit. I've got a multi-boot system: 11.4, 12.1 RC1 ISO on USB stick, and 12.1 RC1 (I hope to reliably install) Desired partitioning for this install: / on /dev/sda5, swap on /dev/sdb10 I booted the USB stick ISO /dev/sdc1 to install 12.1 RC1. Changed its default partitioning so that / was on /dev/sda5, under an extended partition. (incidentally, I've got WinXP on /dev/sda1, so I really don't want to screw that up). After the formatting and copying of default KDE setup files, and successful stage 1 install completion, the system pops up a 10 seconds to reboot popup. System reboots. System never completes the reboot into the 2nd stage install. As it starts to boot, it says (I hope you look at this seriously, because I'm typing this by hand): root (hd1,4) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.1.0-rc9-1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD3200AA JB-00WGA0-WD-WCARW6176241-part5 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-MAXTOR_STM3320620AS_ 3QF0Y2G1-part10 splash=silent quiet [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x4200, size=0x4481e0] initrd /boot/initrd-3.1.0-rc9-1-default [Linux-initrd @ 0x37394000, 0xc5baa6 bytes] [ 3.762488] /usr/src/packages/BUILD/kernel-default-3.1.rc9/linux-3.1-rc9/driv ers/rtc/hctosys.c: unable to open rtc device (rtc0) doing fast boot Creating device nodes with udev [ 4.522668] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: mem timing table length unknown: 14 Trying manual resume from /dev/disk/by-id/ata-MAXTOR_STM3320620AS_ 3QF0Y2G1-part10 resume device /dev/disk/by-id/ata-MAXTOR_STM3320620AS_ 3QF0Y2G1-part10 not found (ignoring) Trying manual resume from /dev/disk/by-id/ata-MAXTOR_STM3320620AS_ 3QF0Y2G1-part10 resume device /dev/disk/by-id/ata-MAXTOR_STM3320620AS_3QF0Y2G1-part10 not found (ignoring) Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD3200AA JB-00WGA0-WD-WCARW6176241-part5 to appear: [ 5.396330] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 6 .................................. (Y/n) n not found -- exiting to /bin/sh sh: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device sh: no job control in this shell $ The same hardware boots successfully: (1) Windows XP (2) Suse 11.4 (been using it for a month with no problems) (3) Before Suse 11.4, I had Suse 11.2 on it for more than 1.5 years The suse 11.2/11.4 installations on this hardware have been my main system. I believe the hardware to be quite reliable with them; this appears to be a regression with 12.1 RC1. I was able to successfully install this RC1 on this system 1 time, and use it for about a day. I had noticed a problem during the stage 2 install (network install not finding release notes), which I was attempting to duplicate when this started failing. It has repeatedly/continuously failed about 5 times in a row as described above. I have reverified the h/w is OK by (1) booting up XP and running chkdsk /R without problem, and (2) booting up suse 11.4 multiple times (from /dev/sdb) and adding my suse 12.1 RC1 install /dev/sda5 to my mounttab as /121. /121 is perfectly visible/accessible from suse 11.4 As I said, I believe the hardware to be quite reliable with all other OSs I've tried; this appears to be a regression with 12.1 RC1. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot to install suse 12.1 RC1 ISO image 2. Complete stage 1 install, do reboot 3. Note that boot process fails before Stage 2 installation takes control Actual Results: See details above; rtc not found, disk not found (even though the image being executed came from that disk) Expected Results: being presented with the Stage 2 suse installation process -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
