[Bug 461819] New: Confusing Partition Proposal Create/ Edit Terminology Counter-intuitive
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461819 Summary: Confusing Partition Proposal Create/Edit Terminology Counter-intuitive Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rob.opensuse.linux@googlemail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- The Installer is rather good, but some changes can make it clearer, and EXCELLENT. When the installer gets to disk layout, it attempts to make a sensible recommendation, but the language used is confusing to Native English speakers. There is a screen, offering a choice, to select Disks, and below "Create" or "Edit". The problem is that it's not clear what is meant. Edit actually refers to adjusting the proposal, generated. Create, actually means to alter the on disk layouts, effectively ignoring the YaST proposals. Recent forum posts, demonstrating that the end user is being confused. http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/402306-strange-partition-probl... http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/402202-partitioner-confused-am... http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/402441-irritating-partition-re... There are a number of threads where users, seem to have preserved the wrong partitions and formatted them, though I do not think the Installer can be faulted there, as it very much, gives the user every chance to check what is going to be done. To me something like the following would be clearer : o Select a disk for a suggested layout o Adjust current disk partitions with Partition tool (for experts) Then, a suggested layout can be calculated, and the inexperienced installer, can be asked : o Accept this lay out proposal o Adjust the proposed lay out with Partition Tool and mount other extra partitions This method guides the inexperience installer and disk partitoner. The expert can be simply given the Partition tool and allowed to configure the system more to their liking than YaST would, without any distraction. I would also like to see a link to an explanation of partitioning and the system requirements available, via a "Help" or "Advice" button. But that is an enhancement. Even if it is hard to alter the structure, the labeling of the choices should be re-considered, as "Create" & "Edit" are unclear to the end user, who rarely (hopefully just once) installs their system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
