[Bug 1186721] New: Mesa-dri-nouveau automatically installed on update but claims to be dangerous
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1186721 Bug ID: 1186721 Summary: Mesa-dri-nouveau automatically installed on update but claims to be dangerous Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: screening-team-bugs@suse.de Reporter: kukuk@suse.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Mesa-dri-nouveau gets automatically installed during an update with "zypper dup", but has a "license" which warns for it: "WARNING: Nouveau DRI/3D driver selected. This driver is considered experimental and is known to have issues with applications that use certain 3D acceleration features of modern NVIDIA hardware." It even has: "Use of this driver is especially not recommended for use with the KDE Desktop Environment or Qt-based Applications." So why get this driver automatically installed, if it is dangerous and even not recommended for my setups (qt and KDE)? And why do we break automatic updates by requiring a manual license acceptance during an upgrade? Either the warning is wrong, then we should remove it. Or the warning is correct, in this case we should never automatically select and install this package at upgrade. Installing a package automatically with a license is already a bad idea, installing a package automatically, where the license warns for the usage of this package, is a really bad idea. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, it's a weak dependancy according to
https://rpm.org/user_doc/dependencies.html
It gets autoselected if package xf86-video-nouveau is installed.
This is not correct: Die folgenden 12 NEUEN Pakete werden installiert: ... Mesa-dri-nouveau xf86-video-nouveau ... xf86-video-nouveau wasn't installed before, too.
Mesa.spec: -------------
%package -n Mesa-dri-nouveau [...] Supplements: xf86-video-nouveau
The warning is correct. Unfortunately we have no other means than this license misuse to implement such a warning.
If the warning is correct, then you should never auto-select the package for installation!
I don't see why this should be marked as a critical bug.
You auto-select a package, which breaks, according to the warning, the setup of the user (qt, KDE, and other things) and which breaks automatic upgrades (nobody wants to auto-accept third party licenses).
There are no guarantees, that "zypper dup" results in a run without any needed interaction.
Correct, but this should only happen if there is a problem which zypper cannot solve themself, not because a package maintainer wants to break the users system with an update by auto-selecting packages for installation the user did de-install before. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think we can remove the license since we now no longer autoselect Mesa-dri-nouveau anyway. And anybody, who really needs 3D support, switches to NVIDIA's proprietary driver anyway. And now I'm searching for the license package. This is the hard part.
