[Bug 686567] New: Network configuration based on static routes leads to initial problems
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=686567 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=686567#c0 Summary: Network configuration based on static routes leads to initial problems Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dieter.jurzitza@t-online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100626 SUSE/3.6.6-1.1 Firefox/3.6.6 After upgrade to openSUSE 11.4 (or fresh install, has no impact), I face a somewhat strange issue with network. I have a static configuration, say net 192.168.44.X, default route 192.168.44.1, using this since years (about suse 9.3 without change). Hence I configure the network card statically from within yast2, setting up routing - all works fine, apparently. I can access internet, can surf, can browse. However, now I am trying to update via yast because there are new updates available. Update starts until file 3 of X, the download of file 3 (arbitrary ...) starts and suddenly stops. I cannot download this file, update fails due to a timeout. Then I use firefox, try to download this file - same behaviour, download say 10kByte, then stop. _ANY_ mirror of opensuse depicts this behaviour, be it http or ftp. I can try ftp on the commandline, I can try midnight commander, whatsoever. File 3 cannot be downloaded. "route" depicts normal values, ifconfig too. ping whatever host on the internet works. Now I do once: ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 and the issue is gone. No more problems. This is weird, I haven't seen something similar in years. Can anyone anticipate what could cause this problem? Previous openSUSE verisons worked flawlessly (9.3, 10.3, 11.3) on the very same machine. Your network configuration is pretty standard. A static IP with an obvious default route is not really "static routing." If you can ping hosts on the internet, the packets are getting out and getting back to you, which means routing is working fine. That internet continues to work while doing other things likewise makes me think the kernel isn't involved. I'm not sure where to bounce this one since it seems more like a service issue than a local machine issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I mean, ifdown ethX / ifup ethX does not change anything in the external network IMHO? I can tell you that rebooting my router where the machines in question are connected to does not impact the issue, hence IMHO it ought to be a local machine issue - and the only "boss" involved here is the kernel, isn't it? It seems the parallel boot triggers the misbehaviour more often but if this can happen in the slow aka serial boot scheme, it could be kernel related. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This one is getting it's IP via DHCP - no static routing here. However, starting a software update resulted in "erratic checksum of index file XXX of repository YYY" don't remember the exact wording, but from a meaning standpoint. (ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse, huge German mirror) Starting update suddenly stopped at a ceratain file - I interrupted, restarted, always got moaning about the file having an erratic checksum. Did an ifdown eth0 / ifup eth0, and, guess what? Suddenly things worked like a charm. No checksum error any more. Fast and issue-free download. So, two _entirely_ independent networks, _entirely_ independent network configurations but a similar issue (well, to be honest, my conclusion is rather a guess than knowledge ...). Seriously, I wonder whether or not I am really the only person struggling with networking issues on 11.4 Thank you for looking into this, take care Dieter Jurzitza -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Seriously, I wonder whether or not I am really the only person struggling with networking issues on 11.4
No, you aren't. I have another problems, although I didn't noticed any problems on my machine without vlan/bridge setup [basic setup as yours]. See: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678540 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679685 As result of them, I can't update most of my machines... so I can just boot a different partition with 11.4 to test using kernel of the day... The problem is, that the behavior seems to differ from machine to machine [even the setup is very similar] and also between the kernel flavors. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you please: - install supportutils (zypper in supportutils) - wait until the problem occurs again & restart the interface to fix it - start "supportconfig" and attach the resulting file [feel free to set the private flag for the attachment] Better from a machine with static configuration / without dhcp. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It hangs with a sed process trying to read from /var/lib/named/proc/kmsg: 10315 pts/2 S+ 0:00 sed -e /^[[:space:]]*#/d -e /^[[:space:]]*;/d -e /^[[:space:]]*\/\//d -e s/?//g -e /^$/d /var/lib/named/proc/kmsg the size of which is 0 (zero) bytes. There are several error messages, so, unless nobody fixes that script (stumbling i.e. over the fact that there is no /etc/modprobe.conf any more ...) I cannot provide the information you're asking for. And, as readily told, I see issues with three different machines having both static and non - static setups that never had had shown problems before - and as readily said, I haven't modified my setup since decades :-) @Jeff, please find the output of hwinfo attached to this bug report. What appears really strange to me is the call to request_irq in both versions: in 11.3 it says: (line 1706) /* Use the now-standard shared IRQ implementation. */ if ((retval = request_irq(dev->irq, vp->full_bus_master_rx ? &boomerang_interrupt : &vortex_interrupt, IRQF_SHARED, dev->name, dev))) { pr_err("%s: Could not reserve IRQ %d\n", dev->name, dev->irq); goto err; } in 11.4 it says: (line 1747) /* Use the now-standard shared IRQ implementation. */ if ((retval = request_irq(dev->irq, vp->full_bus_master_rx ? boomerang_interrupt : vortex_interrupt, IRQF_SHARED, dev->name, dev))) { pr_err("%s: Could not reserve IRQ %d\n", dev->name, dev->irq); goto err; } Please not one refers to pointer boomerang_interrupt:vortex_interrupt, one does not.
