[Bug 227988] New: No root login after net installation.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227988 Summary: No root login after net installation. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: gerberb@zenez.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com On IRC there have been a lot of reports of no passowrd being set for root. Needing to create a root password like using http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux-tutorials-howtos-reference-material/5... Or other root password setting methods like bash shell from grub, rescue system. I was able to deublicate this by doing a net install from local NFS shares. During the installation I took my NFS share offline and after a time the installation looked like it had finished. On the reboot there was no root password. I created one and then restarted the installation. Many have waited over 10 hours for an net installation and then can not login. I am not sure what to do. I think this is being caused by all the load on the main/mirrors for installation. I am not sure what can be done. I felf it needed to be reported. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227988 ------- Comment #1 from gerberb@zenez.com 2006-12-13 04:20 MST ------- Because an installation does not continue with an ignore to the next file it abouts installation. This is a major bug. I was doing an upgrade of my laptop. I had to start the net installation over 14 times because of individual file failures. It would be better if the installation would continue to the next file/set of files on an ignore. The installation used to do this, but with 10.1 and now 10.2 if fails/aborts. It is a real pain. This should probably be an aditional bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Do you mean that the second stage of installation (setting of root password, configuration of network, authentication, hardware and release notes) were skipped? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227988 ------- Comment #5 from gerberb@zenez.com 2007-01-02 10:47 MST ------- Sorry, I do not have the logs. I waited til about 2/3 of the install had happened. When I took down the NFS server. It took a really long time before the system came back. The 4 times I did it only one did not ask for an abort ignore rettray That time The system just rebooted and presented a login but I had not created a password. The other 3 time when I clicked on igrnore the system would then continue to the same problem with no root password. Skipping the rest of the installation from that point. I know that during this time there were over 50 different people on IRC with the problem. That is why I tried to recreated it. Saddly the machine I use for this has died. We had a car hit the electric pole and I lost 3 computers and some Hard drives. I do not have enough battery backup's /isolation transformers for all my machines. I lost 3 machines from the power spikes/problems. Sorry. It took till today to find out just how bad everything was. They are unrecoverable. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227988 locilka@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |NEEDINFO Info Provider| |aj@novell.com ------- Comment #6 from locilka@novell.com 2007-01-05 05:18 MST ------- Well, second stage installation (continuing after the computer reboots) can, of course, be aborted, killed, ... whatever. On the other hand, it should be sufficient only to restart the computer and installation should ask whether you want to continue. See this note in the .changes file: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Wed Oct 18 16:13:12 CEST 2006 - locilka@suse.cz - Added a life-belt into the second stage installation. It can be restarted under these circumstances: 1.) User aborts the installation 2.) Installation process is killed during the installation 3.) Computer is restarted during the installation (reset) The very next time the system is restarted. YaST starts and informs user that the previous installation was aborted/failed. Then users are asked whether they want to rerun the second stage installation (FATE #300422). - yast2-installation-2.14.3 ------------------------------------------------------------------- But, actually, the second stage installation can always fail (in some cases) and user would never reach the root password dialog. Boyd, did this work for you? AJ: What do you think of these two solutions? 1.) Make root-password dialog (as the most important in second stage) the first dialog that opens up in second stage installation. We would have to make sure that everything needed is installed from CD1. This is an easy solution but needn't help. 2.) Move root-password dialog to the first stage? There could be some security reasons that the password (but hashed with MD5, blowfish or burncat) could remain in swap after the system is rebooted. There is a 0.001% chance for that ;) This is not a simple solution and it's worth having a feature in FATE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227988 ------- Comment #9 from locilka@novell.com 2007-01-16 03:41 MST ------- Actually not, first, what we do, is that we install from CDs2-5 and from another sources (these sources need to be initialized by a package manager which fails very often when servers are overloaded). Sometimes zypp might also fail and kill the entire installation process. Safe would be to set the root password before anything else is executed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
