[Bug 758961] New: Laptop does not power down, the rest of switching off process works correctly
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=758961 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=758961#c0 Summary: Laptop does not power down, the rest of switching off process works correctly Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: espinosa_cz@centrum.cz QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0 Computer does not power down. Whole switching off process seems to work correctly except the very last point – where it does not really power down my laptop. It is very tricky and dangerous, it is difficult to spot that is not switched off, you can see KDE closing, splash screen, you can hear disk heads parking off, the screen turns pitch black, all quite and dark, ..except a "power" diode indicator on the front panel keeps shining. One have to long press the power button to really power down. The indicator is not well visible from the top, easy to overlook. If this happens, the laptop stays powered and hot. And getting hotter. I looks like fans are switched off and do not kick in. I have already forgot twice! When I found for the first time, the laptop was steaming hot, when I removed it in the tube, fans were inactive. I could feel even in my backpack the radiating heat, that how I found out. Next time (today) I forgot again and this time (luckily) the heat kill switch saved the day. The laptop was still very hot when I unpacked it home. I can kill off my laptop this way! It is so easy to forget and overlook. Laptop: Dell XPS M1530 with NVidia card 8600 GT. I noticed this bug recently, a week ago. I suppose that it worked with vanilla openSuse 12.1 installation I made few more weeks ago and then keep updating. Strangely, the upgrade I did at the critical time was adding KDE 4.8 to my repositories. I will try to investigate in my zypper log. Observations: 1) When shutdown is started from KDE, the screen is shut down. 2) When shutdown is started from KDE, but when during the sequence I press Esc, to see command be printed on screen, the screen does not switch screen off, the text stays on indefinitively, the last command is about powering down. 3) When shutdown/powerdown is started from failsafe X session, from a xterm, no nvidia I guess – no difference, does not work. 4) Hibernate – does not either, laptop stays powered. 5) ONLY EXCEPTION – when I boot to stage "1" only, to root shell, and submit powerdown command – it works then! The laptop is fully powered down. Shell commands: Shutdown - does not work (any variant of parameter I tried) powerdown – does not work Filesystems are unmounted correctly, I lost no data, fsck runs quickly, no restoring journal delay. does "halt -p" works ? No it did not
sounds like a kernel bug.. Yes
Any hint how to test this kind of bug? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Take a look at the Nvidia proprietary driver from the build service! Do you have a link!? OpenSuse does not propagate anything besides official one-version-at-a-time ftp nvidia site. Webpin is gone. I am somewhat lost in searching OBS.
After some frantic searching I found this: Project Bumblebee. Is primarily focused on Primus technology and they provide nvidia drivers just as a side job: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Bumblebee-Project:/nVidia:/l... The drivers are DKMS (nice!) and the provide several versions back! And latest betas. I will give it a shot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is the other issue that suspend doesn't succeed and you see "2 tasks refusing to freeze" in your messages.log? That would be bug 758379 - STR (Suspend to RAM) fails
Unlikely. I don't use NFS. It fails having or not having anything remote mounted. I don't use suspend to RAM much. If I remember well, yes, it did fail too. I am afraid I have cleaned my /var/log dir. After downgrading nvidia driver as mentioned above, from Bumblebee project, the issue disappeared never to return. Tested for weeks by now. This is clearly nvidia/kernel issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

we can't really help you here
Well for start you should officially provide multiple driver versions as similar issues are common. Otherwise, no worries, guys from Bumblebee Project helped a lot. Perhaps you should endorse the Bumblebee Project as they do very well.
root cause seem to be in the Nvidia binary drivers.
..or a bug in kernel/core utils exposed by external party, as it often happens, myself being a SW developer. Linux guys seems to be all too quick dismiss an issue if some non-OSS bits are involved. Ideally investigation should follow :( Anyway, bugzilla is not an ideal place to discuss this. Let's leave it for a forum. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
