[Bug 329630] New: GNOME menu structure
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=329630 Summary: GNOME menu structure Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: infernux@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer First off, I was amazed by the polishment that went into openSUSE 10.3 so far. But yet, I have a thing that keeps me from using openSUSE as my main distribution: I don't like using the new start menu "slab", while I can see that it is of use for some people, it is not that great for me (I use a wide range of software, more that would fit into "favorites" and the applications window feels "slow" for my needs). Anyway, there is the old menu applet, which I would love to use. However, the menu displayed here is not the default GNOME layout, but a custom layout with a lot of submenus. The same layout is also used when I add custom application launchers to the panel. The problem with the submenus is that I rearely see more than one entry in one submenu. So, for example, in the Graphics menu, I have a submenu "Image Editing" which only holds Gimp. In all, I would have 6 launchers in Graphics, now I have 5 submenus, with each holding one (one holding two) launchers. To make things worse, the submenus use KDE icons, mostly, thus feeling really out of place. It would be great if the default GNOME layout (no submenus) would be used. This would also be more consistant with the SLAB menu, as it would show the same categories as the application window. Perhaps keep the submenus around, but the default should be off. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I suppose most people don't have 100+ apps in one category. If you have any normal amount (10-20 apps per category) you don't need subcategories because you can scan a list faster than opening every subcategory when looking for one application -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=329630#c3 --- Comment #3 from Michael Monreal <infernux@web.de> 2007-09-29 04:56:10 MST --- Well, surely it is a suggestion but I tried to make my (use)-case clear and I really think this is not too uncommon. Right now, openSUSE is unusable for me... I have other problems, like the package management/update tools, but I would be fine using zypper on the command line. But for a menu I use so often it just don't work for me having to navigate into those pointless submenus. So for me this is a bug, namely the bug that keeps me from using openSUSE as my primary distribution, which is a sad thing. I don't know how this menu structure comes to be, but if there is a way to work around it (deleting some menu definition xml?) please tell me. I really think the default should be changed but for now I would be glad to use such a (simple, I don't want to recompile or anything) workaround. I installed it by hand and it really doesn't solve my problems. I would have to move all launchers out of their sub-categories by hand and then disable the subcategories... Another thing I didn't mention yet: the "System" part of the normal GNOME menu applet only shows YaST/Help/Logout. Where is Preferences? Where is Administration? Well, Administration is YaST I guess, but why does it not show a menu with the YaST launchers? Hmm, I'm not sure the current gnome-menus package can be compiled for 10.3, you'll probably need to try in the build service. Thanks Vincent! It's not perfect yet but it's certainly a huge improvement for me. For the record, this is what I use ATM: xinitrc --- export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome- source .xinitrc.template --- The problems I see now are: A) as you noted, there are too many launchers. Many are shown in multiple menus. This should be easy to fix I think. B) many launchers have sub-ideal names. The gedit launcher for example shows "gedit" which is not a great idea IMHO. Why was this changed from the default "Text Editor"? If there are problems with (for example) KDE apps also being called "Text Editor", at least the name should be "GEdit Text Editor". The problem with this is that the SLAB menu displays "Name GenericName" IIRC. What about changing the menubar applet to do something similar? What do you think Vincent? That's what we have. I'll propose the change on the mailing list. (In reply to comment #29 from Ilya Stavisskiy)

Let's keep this bug on the XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome- topic. Everything else should go elsewhere (the GenericName vs Name stuff is upstream). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Factory only has gnome-menus-branding-opensuse though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the opensuse gnome meeting today, we decided to first fix the branding packages: + branding-openSUSE would contain gnome-applications.menu which would just contain a link to applications.menu + branding-upstream would contain the upstream menu And then we can always set the environment variable. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
