[Bug 235267] New: Nautilus crashes upon removal of plug & play devices requiring a reboot of desktop
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235267 Summary: Nautilus crashes upon removal of plug & play devices requiring a reboot of desktop Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: UNIX Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: ihno@novell.com ReportedBy: Chananko@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de The new plug and play media system is causing a nautilus crash whenever it is removed. Additionally, when copying from a cd burner device the nautilus file manager crashes and locks the gmone desktop requiring a complete reboot at times to clear the computer. Other times, the gnome desktop suffers from a complete loss of its icons after forcing the nautilus file manager window to close with a "force quit". Additionally, when removing an A-Data PD9 flash drive from the USB port, Nautilus crashed in a similar manner causing a gnome desktop lockup. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This required a reboot to clear the computer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235267 ------- Comment #5 from Chananko@yahoo.com 2007-01-24 07:16 MST ------- BTW--I updated Xfce desktop to the new SUSE BUILD SERVICE (X11:XFCE) VER4.4. Using Thunar appears to eliminate the lockup and crash issues associated with removable and hot-plugged media. This seems to bring us back to Nautilus as the cause of the lockup. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Icons disappearing from the desktop is generally evidence of a nautilus crash. Within a Gnome session, nautilus will typically restart. - In Gnome, nautilus also is responsible for the root window (i.e. Gnome wallpaper). The right-click menu on the desktop comes from nautilus. If nautilus is started (for whatever reason) on a non-Gnome desktop, it may in some cases assume responsibility for drawing the root window, which might interfere with other desktops. I'm not sure why using k3b under XFCE would cause nautilus to start, though. Moreover, while rebooting would kill nautilus, it's probably not necessary. "killall nautilus" would probably suffice, outside the context of a Gnome session. I'm not sure what kind of lockup was seen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235267 ------- Comment #9 from Chananko@yahoo.com 2007-02-07 18:01 MST ------- I used nautilus under XFCE to start K3B because XFFM (XFCE default) file manager seems to need a permanent addition to the FSTAB for mounting the media. Nautilus uses the hotplug and play method as well as the new Thunar (XFCE file manager). So XFCE 4.4 seems to alleviate the issue with the desktop being taken over. Specifically, the lockup does entail taking about 1/2 of each icon away or removing them totally. The Gnome desktop then becomes not functional since the keyboard is also locked. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If you could do the following, I would be very happy: 1) Install nautilus-debuginfo, glib2-debuginfo, gtk2-debuginfo, gnome-vfs2-debuginfo. 2) Start "gnome-session-properties" from a shell. 3) In the "Current Session" tab, remove all instances that start with "nautilus" from the list. 4) Hit the "Apply" button below the list. 5) Your desktop icons should now be gone. 6) Enter "gdb nautilus" in a shell. 7) When you see the (gdb) prompt, enter "run". 8) Produce the hang (make sure it's really stuck - typically, it will stop drawing your desktop icons). 9) Hit Ctrl-C in the gdb shell. 10) Enter "t a a bt" in the gdb shell. 11) Copy and paste all the output it gives you to a text file (you'll need to hit enter several times to get past "more" prompts). 12) Attach the text file to this bug.' If any of this is unclear to you, please let me know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I was not able to create a "hang" when copying from CD media. This hang was consistent when I first installed openSUSE 10.2. I have attached the text file so you can see what is going on in nautilus and gnome. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235267 ------- Comment #13 from hpj@novell.com 2007-02-19 17:15 MST ------- That trace looks like Nautilus is working normally when it gets interrupted by ctrl-C (SIGNINT). If you can't interrupt and trace it while it's hanging as first reported, the stack trace won't be useful to me. Can you please try to make it hang and generate a trace from that as described in comment #10? Alternatively, if Nautilus hangs and you're not running it in gdb, you can try to get a trace this way (while Nautilus is hanging): gdb nautilus $(pidof nautilus) Then follow the instructions starting at step 10 in comment #10. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
