[Bug 591085] New: open-vm-tools on the live media?
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591085 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591085#c0 Summary: open-vm-tools on the live media? Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: dominique.leuenberger@tmf-group.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- I think it could be beneficial if we would allos the installation of open-vm-tools on the live media. A lot of testing of new releases is done in Virtual Machines (virtuabox, vmware), where the live CD is used. For 'installs' in VMs with access to the repositories the tools are installed using supplements on hardware level. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The 'risk' would probably be on the vmxnet driver that morphs the pcnet32 away (is that used by vbox? I think they bring their own one). Other than that, we'd need to verify if vmcheck returns true also in a vbox or if this is specific enough for vmware guests. Then we could wrap the start of the vmtoolsd service in a 'if in vmware' (otherwise we'd probably have to wrap it with some magic from /proc or /sys, identifying the system). So all in all: only the vmxnet is risky, the rest should be solvable (how do the vbox tools act on a vmware install?) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591085 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591085#c4 John Savanyo <jsavanyo@vmware.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |jsavanyo@vmware.com --- Comment #4 from John Savanyo <jsavanyo@vmware.com> 2010-05-06 18:34:31 UTC --- Actually, VMware does not officially support these open-vm-tools, so we recommend that you remove them from the distro. VMware distributes tools and source code for drivers with each VMware product release that are intended for use with that particular combination of OS release and hypervisor. You should also be aware that we are in the process of upstreaming our kernel drivers and expect them to be included in the base kernel. This will eliminate the need for users to hassle with building and installing drivers. The vmxnet3 virtual NIC was in 2.6.32, the vmw_pvscsi virtual HBA was in 2.6.33 and the balloon driver (vmmemctl) has been accepted recently into 2.6.34. The vmxnet3 and vmw_pvscsi should already be in 11.3 and hopefully vmmemctl will be in milestone7. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
