[Bug 694964] New: Acer Aspire One netbook reports "no network running" after install
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=694964 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=694964#c0 Summary: Acer Aspire One netbook reports "no network running" after install Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rallcorn@uucpnet.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 While converting an Acer AspireONE Netbook (model D250) from Windows XP Home to openSUSE LINUX v11.4, I used a thumbdrive image (LIVE images) with the GNome GUI, to install the OS. The drive was wiped clean of Windows and the "hidden" partition, and then partition by openSUSE's install process. All items were detected and the installation moved along in, what appeared to be, a successful fashion. During the installation, the netbook was plugged into a home network (IP range: 192.168.1.x - Class C) with a hardwire cable, with DHCP services running. No updates were offered at the end of the installation. The system rebooted and asked me to remove the memory stick. When it booted up, we were in X (X-Windows) and ready to go! I launched Firefox and ... and ... what? No network!!! I go into YAST to check it all out and when I check everything it appears to be autosensed ok! I click on OK and have it continue and during the final phases of the YAST Network setup, I receive an error: No network running That's it! No details, nuthin! I go back into Windows and launch a terminal session. An IFCONFIG reports the following: eth0: No IP address info of any kind lo: Of course this is installed ... wlan0: Non existent! This one didn't even appear!! I would appreciate some assistance/help in fixing this ... My 13yr old son wants openSUSE "like his Daddy" has on his notebook! Thanks guys! -rAllcorn- Richard A. Allcorn email: rAllcorn@uucpnet.org or: richAllcorn@ITNetworking.info my cell: (512)844-7424 P.S. I am a "BIG" supporter of SuSE LINUX, even before NOVELL! See my QRef site for LINUX: http://www.uucpnet.org/LINUX Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. I tried another re-install, formatting/wiping everything (nothing saved) 2. I can "manually" enter IFCONFIG stuff and it will "ping" the network stuff! 3. Actual Results: The system will not "see" the network, either with hardware (100BaseT class C LAN) cable or with wireless (not even lighting up!)* *I have noticed that you have to take the driver, once it's autosensed, and take it back to a legacy driver for the wireless to work Expected Results: A fully working system, with no flaws ... in true SuSE style! The system should have full networking capabilities, and come up with the NetworkManager auto-sensing the eth0 port and allowing me full access to the Internet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And first you need make sure the driver works fine, maybe 'hwinfo --netcard' could be helpfull. Second, how do you manager your network? NetworkManager? if so, please attach your /var/log/NetworkManager . That would be helpfull. Thanks! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Allcorn <rallcorn@uucpnet.org> 2011-05-20 20:17:56 UTC --- You're not going to believe this part! I went down to FRY ELECTRONICS and purchased a USB CD-ROM drive. Up to now I've had to use a thumbdrive memory stick to install the OS on a Netbook. Now, I plugged the USB CD-ROM drive in and booted up on the NETWORK INSTALL CD. I re-installed the complete system OFF OF THE NETWORK using a LAN cable plugged into the LAN port (eth0) ! You heard me right, it installed "OFF OF THE NETWORK" to the notebook!! Now, here's the kicker ... once it had finished and rebooted up, and successfully even reached the "NTP" time sync (during install), the network does not work!! Same problem as with the past ... "Nuthin" There's something with the latest NETWORK installs that is causing this problem, I'm guessing ... Here's some facts: Drivers listed (in the network setup!) eth0 - Atheros ARB132/L1c wlan0 - BCM4312 802.11b/g It comes up, if I run a plain "ifconfig" as root, showing: IP: 192.168.1.3 (DHCP should have assigned it between .100-.199) and Broadcast as: 192.168.1.255 (gateway is: 192.168.1.254) I I did a "hardware info" scan using the utility in gnome after the install, and using a thumbdrive I moved it over to my Lenovo T61 Laptop running LINUX also. I am attaching it for your reference ... -rich- rAllcorn Richard A.
