[Bug 407531] New: "Error - No kernel was found. The installation may have failed" after new DomU installation.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=407531 Summary: "Error - No kernel was found. The installation may have failed" after new DomU installation. Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: cgriffin@novell.com ReportedBy: mgould@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Field Engineer openSUSE 11 (2.6.25.5-1.1-xen and 2.6.25.9-0.2-xen) on 4Gb Dell D830 (Intel Core2 Duo CPU T9300 64 Bit) using traditional networking (ifconfig) and hard IP address (not DHCP). KDE: 3.5.9 "release 49.1" Two guest OS - different manifestation of the same issue, I believe: (1) If I install SLED *or* SLES 10SP2 (just do a default install: next, next, next...) then it will go through all the install screens and copy all the files but when it gets to the first reboot will display "Error - No kernel was found. The installation may have failed." (2) If I install NetWare 6.5SP7 then when I boot from the DVD ISO it says "Preparing to start NetWare... Press any key to interrupt" (so I wait) then it says: Error: 1323 Error: 1391 Error: 871 Type: S to Start NetWare P to specify start parameters H for Help Selecting anything displays "error loading server" and it loops through the above. I am successfully running Xen on SLES10 on other hardware. I have successfully run Xen on SLED10SP1 on *this* hardware. (It was running SLED & Xen OK then I rebuilt it with openSUSE 11 & Xen which is not OK). I have tried different installation sources so my source media is not corrupt. I have removed and re-added the Xen components via YaST. Can find nothing via Bugzilla, Google, Novell's forums or openSUSE forums. ***NOTE*** During UK work hours I'm on Novell's internal network if anyone wants to ssh in and see this first hand ***NOTE*** -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It looks like the configuration file is not being updated: name="sled10" uuid="8fb99f09-8f39-c962-180a-3f791ddaf6a7" memory=512 vcpus=1 on_poweroff="destroy" on_reboot="destroy" on_crash="destroy" localtime=0 builder="linux" kernel="/tmp/kernel.GNqfMa" ramdisk="/tmp/install-initrd.DBJthR" extra=" install=http://isos/sled10-sp2-x86_64/ " disk=[ 'file:/var/lib/xen/images/sled10/disk0,xvda,w', ] vif=[ 'mac=00:16:3e:16:ac:2a', ] vfb=['type=vnc,vncunused=1' ] So we modified it to look like this: name="sled10" uuid="8fb99f09-8f39-c962-180a-3f791ddaf6a7" memory=512 vcpus=1 on_poweroff="destroy" on_reboot="destroy" on_crash="destroy" localtime=0 builder="linux" # kernel="/tmp/kernel.GNqfMa" # ramdisk="/tmp/install-initrd.DBJthR" extra=" install=http://isos/sled10-sp2-x86_64/ " disk=[ 'file:/var/lib/xen/images/sled10/disk0,xvda,w', ] vif=[ 'mac=00:16:3e:16:ac:2a', ] vfb=['type=vnc,vncunused=1' ] bootloader="/usr/lib/xen/boot/domUloader.py" bootargs="--entry=xvda2:/boot/vmlinuz-xen,/boot/initrd-xen" Note the last two lines added and the two #'d out. Now the VM can be started and we pick up where we should have left off, with the SLED in the DomU prompting me for the root password. Why would this happen? Tomorrow I plan to do another run from scratch. Today, before each test, I have been deleting /var/lib/xen/images/* and /etc/xen/vm/* but it looks like I also need to delete /var/lib/xenstored/tdb (which I haven't been doing so far). Do you recommend anything else? Should I clear out everything in /var/lib/xend/* for instance? Could you try the pre-release versions of NW 6.5 SP8 in these failure scenarios and see what the results are? My suspicion is that you are installing with > 1VCPU in the NetWare guest, and that it is hitting an issue as it is rebooting, and comes down hard, and that the file system is not correctly intact after reboot resulting in the Error 1323 etc errors you report. I did hit a crash/hang upon down, which is a result of a difference in the way the later Xen code manages multiple processors. This impacts the NetWare debugger and hence Abends, which apparently are happening on downing the server. I get Xen Issue #24 Abend, when the processors are stopping as part of downing NetWare. This is one of the main reasons that NetWare 6.5 SP7 is not compatible with the latest Xen releases. Again, try your scenarios with the current NetWare 6.5 SP8 pre-release builds. Also, perhaps retry NW 6.5 SP7 with only 1 VCPU and see if your problem goes away. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So to sum up: For the following configuration... openSUSE 11.0 xen-3.2.1_16881_04-4.2 xen-tools-3.2.1_16881_04-4.2 xen-libs-3.2.1_16881_04-4.2 libvirt-python-0.4.4-3.1 libvirt-0.4.4-3.1 virt-manager-0.5.3-21.1 vm-install-0.2.9-5.1 ..the situation so far is: (1) Can't install SLEx DomU from a network (http) source - workaround is to use a local .ISO (2) Can't place disk images anywhere other than /var/lib/xen - workaround is to symbolic link to /home/me/xen or wherever (3) Can't install a released, publicly-available and supported version of NetWare as DomU - workaround is to use NetWare 6.5 SP8 Beta (722 or later) Thus I have workarounds for all my problems but no fixes. I'll try and get you --debug logs for these errors. Are you still OK with three issues on the same bug or do you want three separate bugs for three separate problems? (I initially thought they may all have the same root cause but now I'm not so sure...!) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We do hundreds of network installs of SLES so we are still missing something here. However, most of our network installs are done via ftp, so that may be one difference. Issue #2) This is an enhancement. There is already bug #174276. When you say you can't specify a different location for the image, are you changing the path in vm-install on the "Virtual Disk" dialog? I am able to specify a different location for the image file in vm-install (sles10sp2 pv guest) using this method. Issue #3) It does sound like using more than 1 vcpu is a problem for PV NetWare. Please let us know if you have the problem when only 1 vcpu is selected. This will help us isolate the issue. Bruce Rogers is the best person to explain the NetWare issues. A separate bug may be needed for this particular issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am now wondering if you saw any "XenBlk barrier write not supported by backend!" messages while installing. There was a bug fixed just this last month where if the backend storage does not support barriers, some disk writes were getting silently dropped. Luckily, it is fairly uncommon to find this situation. But this could explain the fact that on reboot the NetWare boot loader didn't find what it was looking for on disk (The "Error:###" messages). Also, FYI, virtualized NetWare does support VCPU >1 when running matched Xen (SLES/OpenSuSE) & NetWare versions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
