[Bug 422555] New: No scanner applications available after scanner installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=422555 Summary: No scanner applications available after scanner installation Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jw@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: --- I connected a USB scanner. A Yast dialog pops up and helps me through a painless installation process. After closing the installation dialog, only a command line tool scanimage is available. kooka, xscanimage and others are missing. Gimp has no scanner in the Acquire Menue. The user has no way to access the scanner from the desktop. Is there a way to suggest additional software to the user, when a scanner was installed for the first time in the system? Package sane-frontends is all it needs to make e.g. gimp happy. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It should be as follows: KDE => kooka (kdegraphics3-scan RPM) Gnome => xsane (xsane RPM) Plain X => xscanimage (sane-frontends RPM) This worked for me in the past and also for openSUSE 11.0 (I selected KDE3 and got kdegraphics3-scan selected by default). Unfortunately the whole pattern stuff is a bit obscure so that I don't know why exactly it didn't work for you (/var/log/YaST2/y2logRPM might help). Therefore this part looks like a "patterns" bug and I cahnge the component accordingly. Regarding "Gimp has no scanner in the Acquire Menue." Only the xsane RPM and the sane-frontends RPM provide a plugin for scanner access directly in Gimp. Therefore when you have KDE as desktop, there is by default no Gimp scanner plugin installed which is bug #422558. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In this case, maybe it is possible to use more generic symbol for scanner. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Actually, I can imagine, that sane-backends will supplement all symbol of supported devices, and frontends will supplement sane-backends plus particular desktop envireonment. I can modify my script from nut to provide hardware supplements. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If we provide the KDE4 scanning frontend, then the patterns should be changed as I suggested in comment #2: KDE4 => skanlite (I don't know its RPM package name) KDE3 => kooka (kdegraphics3-scan RPM) Gnome => xsane (xsane RPM) Plain X => xscanimage (sane-frontends RPM) If we do not provide skanlite, then the patterns should be as I wrote in comment #1 (which should be already the case): KDE => kooka (kdegraphics3-scan RPM) Gnome => xsane (xsane RPM) Plain X => xscanimage (sane-frontends RPM) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
