Summary: openSuSE 11.4: intel_ips causes high load - hangs in d
state
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.4
Version: Final
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: andihartmann@freenet.de

Standard kernel desktop of OpenSuSE 11.4 or 2.6.38-1-desktop.
[ 61.689778] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU TDP doesn't match expected value

The ips-monitor thread runs continuously in D-state and produces therefore a
continuously high load - even if the processor is "idle", the load is exactly
1.
ps aux | grep ips
root 593 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 17:20 0:00 [ips-adjust]
root 594 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 17:20 0:00 [ips-monitor]
If the module is blacklisted, the load goes down to 0 in idle state.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot the kernel-desktop 64bit in init 3
2. ps aux | grep ips
root 593 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S 17:20 0:00 [ips-adjust]
root 594 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 17:20 0:00 [ips-monitor]
3. uptime
16:55pm up 0:42, 5 users, load average: 1.00, 1.00, 1.00
4. blacklist intel_ips and reboot:
18:38pm up 0:42, 5 users, load average: 0.01, 0.07, 0.10
Actual Results:
Load is 1 even if the machine is idle.
Expected Results:
18:38pm up 0:42, 5 users, load average: 0.01, 0.07, 0.10
-> Load should be 0 if the machine is idle.

If it contains this patch: https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/3/23/414 , it will be working fine.
